The term ‘Institution of Civil Engineers’ or ‘ICE’ or ‘us’ or ‘we’ refers to the owner of the website whose registered office is One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AA. The term ‘you’ refers to the user or viewer of our website.

The use of this website is subject to the following terms of use:

Conditions of entry

Upon entering the ICE photo competition, you agree to these terms of service.

  1. Submission of photos is open only to ICE members, of all grades, in the UK and internationally.
  2. Photos can feature any aspect of civil engineering related to the theme of ‘community and infrastructure’.
  3. Photos must be your own work and not infringe the rights of any other party.
  4. ICE will not accept photos that employ the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creation, design or development.
  5. Composite photos will not be accepted. This includes entries that combine two or more individual photos together to make one image, or entries that superimpose elements photographed individually onto an image.
  6. Editing: photos that have had blemishes removed will be accepted. Photos may have colour altered or enhanced, for the sake of the composition. Photos may be cropped to improve the composition.
  7. Photos must be original – and must not have been previously entered into any other competition.
  8. All entries must be submitted through via the competition page on the ICE website.
  9. Physical copies of photos will not be accepted.
  10. Members can submit a maximum of three photos each. Each image must be submitted separately.
  11. All entries must include the following information:
    • Your first name and last name
    • Your email address
    • ICE membership number
    • Photo title
    • Photo location
    • 100 words to explain/describe your photo and how it relates to the ‘community and infrastructure’ theme.
  12. Personal data will be processed safely and securely in line with the ICE photo competition privacy policy.
  13. Photos must be a minimum of 300dpi.
  14. Photos must be submitted in JPG format, up to a maximum size of 5MB. Please retain the original file of all submitted entries. Image files should have the filename format: title of image_firstname_lastname e.g. SevernBridge_David_Jones.jpg
  15. The ICE is not responsible for any entries that are incomplete, not received or arrive as corrupted files. The ICE is not responsible for informing entrants in the case of incomplete entries, non-delivered or corrupted files.
  16. Each entry must be submitted before the deadline of 23:59 on Tuesday 22 April 2025. Entries submitted after the closing date will not be eligible.
  17. No health and safety rules of construction sites or other locations should be broken to obtain photos. Such action may result in disqualification. No person or persons should be put in danger when taking photographs.
  18. Entrants must own the copyright of each photo entered. In entering the competition, you are granting the ICE a royalty-free, worldwide license to publish photos in print and electronic format for purposes connected with the ICE and the promotion of civil engineering without acknowledgement (although a credit may be given if appropriate). No fees will be payable.
  19. Entrants will keep the ICE harmless from any claims that their entry infringes the personal or proprietary right of any other person.
  20. Each entrant confirms that anyone depicted in an entry has given their permission for the inclusion of their photo in the entry and the use of the entry including their photo by the entrant and the ICE. Where such persons depicted are under the age of 16, then consent will be required from the parent/guardian. The consent form for minors may be used for such purposes.
  21. If a photo features individual, residential, commercial or private property, you must gain permission from the owner and be able to provide written consent if requested by the ICE.
  22. Entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.
  23. The ICE reserves the right to cancel this competition or amend the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary, in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.
Judging
  1. One winner and one runner up will be chosen following a three-stage process.
    • The ICE’s communications team will screen all photos to ensure they meet the requirements outlined in these conditions. Photos that do not meet the requirements will be rejected. Entrants will not be informed.
    • A panel of judges will create a shortlist of photos.
    • Those photos will be open to a public vote. The photo with the most votes will win. In the case of a tie, the lead judge will make the final decision.
  2. Photos will be judged on the following criteria:
    • Adherence to the theme
    • Composition
    • Originality
    • Appeal to a wide audience
  3. The judges reserve the right to exclude any photograph they believe has been excessively treated, altering its authenticity.
  4. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  5. The winner will be informed on the week commencing 9 June 2025.
  6. If the winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts, the ICE reserves the right to offer the prize to a runner-up.
  7. The winning photo will be displayed in One Great George Street, on a long-term basis.
Prizes

First place:

  • Invitation to the unveiling of the winning picture on the evening of 2 July 2025 at One Great George Street, as part of the Inspiring Engineering Excellence Conference.
  • £500 cash
  • Framed print of the selected photo.

One runner up:

  • £250 cash
  • Framed print of the selected photo.

No alternative prizes will be offered.

The ICE reserves the right to amend or alter the prizes and terms and conditions of the competition if necessary.

Publicity
  1. The ICE retains the right to pass the photos to a third party to promote civil engineering e.g. the media. Each prize winner consents to the promoter publishing their name and the details they have provided about the photo in publicity for the competition.
  2. Publicity will include, but not be limited to, a news story on the ICE website (ice.org.uk), posts on the ICE’s social media channels and use in the media.
  3. The ICE reserves the right to use, in full, the photos submitted to the competition for publicity and promotional usage.

  1. Entry is open to anyone living or working in Wales.
  2. Photographs must be submitted into either the Personal or Professional category depending on the criteria.
    • Personal: Taken by an amateur photographer.
    • Professional: Taken by a commercial photographer or photographer working for a company using a drone.
  3. No person should break any health and safety rule of any construction site or other location in any way to obtain a photograph. Do not put yourself or anyone else in danger when taking photographs.
  4. The subject can be any aspect of civil engineering photographed at anytime, anywhere in Wales before 06 September 2024. The photograph(s) must be your own work and not infringe the rights of any other party.
  5. The entry must be sent via email to [email protected] and include the following information:
    • Photo competition / Personal or Professional in the email subject line
    • Your name (and membership status if applicable)
    • Your age (if under 16)
    • Contact details (email and phone number)
    • Details about the image(s) i.e. title, subject and location with the file name as a reference
    • Type of camera used (and settings, if appropriate)
  6. Photographs may be cropped (whilst retaining standard image dimensions), enhanced (e.g. brightened/ lightened), but the content must not be manipulated (i.e. any content moved/added/removed).
  7. The judging panel will include: representatives from the official sponsors, a professional photographer, ICE Wales Cymru communications lead, ICE Wales Cymru chair and chairs future leader.
  8. The judges reserve the right to exclude any photograph they believe has been excessively treated, altering its authenticity.
  9. The promoter of this competition is:
    ICE Wales Cymru, Cambrian Buildings, Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay, CF10 5FL.
  10. You must own the copyright of each photograph image entered and you will retain copyright, however in entering the competition you are granting ICE a royalty-free, world-wide license to publish images in print and electronic format for purposes connected with ICE and the promotion of civil engineering without acknowledgement (although a credit may be given if appropriate). No fees will be payable. ICE retains the right to pass to a 3rd party to promote civil engineering e.g. the media. Each prize winner consents to the promoter publishing their name and hometown/city in publicity for the competition
  11. Entrants will keep ICE harmless from any claims in relation to their entry that the entry infringes the personal or proprietary right of any other person. Each entrant also confirms that anyone depicted in an entry has given their permission for the inclusion of their image in the entry and the use of the entry including their image by the entrant and ICE. Where such persons depicted are under the age of 16, then consent will be required from the parent/guardian. The attached ‘consent form’ may be used for such purposes.
  12. ICE reserves the right to cancel this competition or amend the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion and if circumstances arise outside of its control.
  13. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  14. An online exhibition of winners and shortlisted entries will be held in November 2024. The winners will be announced prior to the exhibition and sent their certificates.
  15. Photograph images should be a minimum of 1500 x 2000 pixels, emailed in jpeg format and named in the following way: Name of image_first name of photographer_lastname.jpg e.g. SevernBridge_David_Jones.jpg

By agreeing to serve as a judge for the 2024-25 ICE CityZen Award you acknowledge and agree to the following terms:

  1. Data Privacy:
    You will handle all entrant data, including competition submissions, videos and personal information, with the utmost care and according to the terms outlined in this document to comply with UK GDPR law.

    Entrants' data will not be shared, used, or disclosed for any purpose other than judging this competition.
  2. File Deletion
    You will delete all downloaded competition submissions (including videos, web links and supporting materials) immediately after the judging process is completed.

    Any backups or copies of the files/content must also be permanently removed.
  3. Confidentiality
    You agree to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all entries, ensuring that no content, entrant details, or judging outcomes are shared with any unauthorised persons including but not limited to social media, colleagues, family members or employer.

    Discussions about entries will only occur within the authorised judging panel meeting or with competition organisers.
  4. Judging Process
    You will adhere strictly to the judging criteria and processes established by the competition organisers. You agree to remain impartial and evaluate all entries fairly and objectively.

By participating as a judge, you confirm your understanding and acceptance of these terms. Failure to adhere to these conditions may result in your removal from the judging panel and/or other actions as deemed appropriate by ICE.
