Initial Professional Development (IPD) is the stage in your career where you develop the special skills and acquire the specialist knowledge and competence needed to practise as a civil engineer or technician.
IPD bridges the gap between your educational base and your professional qualification. IPD is also part of Continuing Professional Development as defined within ICE 3006A.
Additional information
The first part of your IPD should be structured to give you the necessary breadth of experience, as defined in the ICE Development Objectives in ICE 3005A.
The second part should be a gradual progression (dependent on your personal development and commitment) towards increasing responsibility. This part should also provide time for consolidation of your experience and for preparation for the Professional Review. The two parts may be concurrent or consecutive.
IPD can be satisfied in the following ways:
ICE Approved Training Schemes
This is the recommended method of obtaining IPD via an approved training scheme aimed at developing your knowledge and experience in a supervised scheme.
Self Managed Training (Career Appraisal)
Your experience will be self managed rather than being closely supervised. The intention is to demonstrate the same development standard as an ICE Approved Training Scheme.
ICE approved NVQ/SVQ
Through the completion of an approved NVQ/SVQ at an appropriate level you will have demonstrated both the educational base and the IPD required for EngTech TMICE.
New graduates
If you are a new graduate or just starting a new job with a new organisation, ICE recommends you join an ICE Approved Training Scheme. It guarantees a commitment to mentoring by your employer, and provides a structured approach to meeting the requirements of the ICE Development Objectives.
