Help qualify the next generation of civil engineers

Become a professional reviewer and assess candidates who want to become professionally qualified.

The institution continues to mentor an increasing number of candidates towards all three of its professionally qualified grades: Technician, Incorporated and Chartered engineer.

Our ability to assess these groups relies on the commitment of ICE members. Being a reviewer provides an opportunity to give back to the institution and the profession.

You can also support aspiring members by becoming a supervising civil engineer, delegated engineer or mentor and support trainees in your company through to professional qualification.

You can assess candidates who want to become professionally qualified.

We depend on a large pool of professionally qualified members to assess candidates taking their Professional Review. They are a vital volunteer group within ICE, both in developing the membership and maintaining standards.

Reviewers need to be competent, experienced, professionally qualified ICE members and professionally active. We need reviewers to be rounded and open-minded in their approach to assessment whilst firm in applying the standards required.

We especially welcome interest from experienced Technician members who have a deep understanding of the work and challenges of their aspiring peers.

By becoming a reviewer, you will:

  • Assure society through providing professionally qualified engineers
  • Learn about the latest industry developments from candidates’ work
  • Gain great satisfaction in helping civil engineers progress their careers
  • Develop your interviewing and critical thinking skills
  • Widen your connecting by meeting engineers across a range of sectors
  • Help ICE to become a diverse, inclusive, globally recognised institution of choice

When you become a reviewer, we ask you to:

  • Attend a new reviewer training day and observe a Professional Review
  • Do at least six reviews over two interview days in the first 12 months (paired with experienced reviewers)

After the first year, we recommend that reviewers commit to at least one review day per year, although of course we would be delighted if you can do more. Reviewers also need to occasionally attend refresher training courses.

As well as attending the interview day, reviewers need to spend some time in the weeks before and after preparing for the review and documenting their assessment and feedback for candidates.

If you are interested in applying, the dates below will allow you to submit your application in time to for the corresponding reviewer training sessions.

Please note that, as part of ICE’s commitment to minimising its carbon footprint, new reviewer trainees who need to fly to a venue will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

If you'd like to join our team of ICE professional reviewers, please submit your application via the submission portal.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected] and a member of the team will be happy to advise.

You can support trainees in your organisation successfully through to professional qualification.

As a supervising civil engineer, or delegated engineer, you will be a role model and mentor to trainees and will:

  • Help trainees to join your company's ICE Training Scheme
  • Identify learning and development opportunities for your trainees
  • Review and sign off their experience and appraisals

Supervising civil engineers and delegated engineers are expected to attend training at least once every two years. And we expect you to set an example to your trainees in terms of professional standards, particularly for CPD.

For those in companies without an ICE Training Scheme, you can become a mentor and help trainees, in your own or another company, through Mentor-Supported Training for IPD. To become a mentor, you attend a formal briefing where you be briefed and supported by an ICE Membership Development Officer. If successful, you can start mentoring a trainee through their initial professional development.

Please contact [email protected] for enquiries about mentor and SCE roles.

We need professionally qualified members to assess candidates for ‘further learning’ towards their academic base.

Many members show competence and commitment beyond the level set by their current academic base, but circumstances prevent them from undertaking further formal study to step up to the next level.

ICE has developed assessment methods to see if candidates have developed the level of understanding required by the Engineering Council’s Learning Outcomes in the course of their career, opening up opportunities for those who would otherwise be held back.

We have two positions to support this pathway to professional qualification:

  1. Experiential learning assessors review candidates working towards IEng MICE or CEng MICE. Assessors are paired and expected to be available every two months and commit approximately twelve hours each year. Assessments occur in February, April, June, August, October and December.
  2. Further learning exam script markers assess candidates working towards CEng MICE. Script markers are paired and will be required in March and October. You’re expected to mark a minimum of ten scripts, which is a yearly commitment of approximately twenty hours.

Assessors need to be competent, experienced and professionally qualified ICE members (CEng and IEng) and professionally active. You will look at candidates' written submissions to determine if they have demonstrated the required standard.

When you become an assessor, we ask you to attend a briefing and shadow a pair of experienced assessors to observe the assessment and moderation process.

This form of volunteering is ideal for members who are interested in becoming ICE professional reviewers.

Can you help a mentee?

ICE’s mentoring search service offers two platforms available exclusively to ICE members. They are designed to match members looking for mentors to help them during the initial professional development (IPD) stage of their membership journey, and for those seeking general career mentoring.

You can find out more and sign up to offer your services as a Mentor here.
