The Wales Cymru Awards celebrate projects of all sizes and scopes from across the region. Every year, the awards are presented to the best civil engineering projects or teams, or to ground-breaking research in the region.
The ICE Wales Cymru Project Awards 2024 are now closed for entries.
We are delighted with the response for entries this year, doubling that of 2023!
The projects will all be assessed by our professional judging panel and a shortlist will be announced in due course. Stay tuned!
Winners will be announced and presented with their Awards at the Gala Dinner on 04 October at the Marriott Hotel, Cardiff.

Successful engineers and projects were celebrated at this year’s ICE Wales Cymru Awards ceremony which took place at the Marriott Hotel, Cardiff on 22 September 2023. Keith Howells FICE, ICE President presented the awards in the presence of over 280 guests in central Cardiff.
The ICE Wales Cymru Awards ceremony 2023 was held during a Gala Dinner at the Marriott Hotel, Cardiff on Friday 22 September where the winners were announced and celebrated.
This year’s projects were described by John Mather, ICE Chartered Civil Engineer, Chair of the Panel of Judges as all impressive in their own way. All the schemes served to contribute towards the achievement of the Welsh Government’s wellbeing goals, with projects ranging in cost between £75k and £30m.

Faith Nursery and Primary School, Kachumbala, Uganda is the current project for Engineers for Overseas Development Limited. It’s a large project so has been split into 3 phases. Two blocks comprising 3 classrooms and a dining room have been constructed at a cost of £75,000. These have been in use since June 2022, and the number of pupils attending the school has grown by 65% to 170.
This award is presented to a project that has demonstrated outstanding design and construction and which has been designed in Wales and constructed elsewhere (either in the UK or overseas).

The capacity of the open channel networks, fed by two natural springs and rainfall, were exceeded posing a risk to several properties in the area. The scheme now consists of an earth bund forming a flood storage area creating a wetland that brings environmental and ecological benefits.
This award is presented to any individual or project demonstrating exceptional skill and expertise or made an exceptional contribution to the profession.

The reservoir safety improvements scheme involved community engagement and provides flood protection to Bala. The reservoir safety improvements will facilitate a proposed extension of the Bala Lake Railway into the town. Environmental sustainability at the heart of the project seeks to enhance habitats and biodiversity.
This award is sponsored by GRIFFITHS in recognition of the civil engineering industry in Wales and the work undertaken to engage with local communities whilst improving infrastructure and / or services.

This project connects several critical hubs, encapsulating many competing challenges through effective design and delivery. Sustainable drainage, transport tools and techniques have been used to create much improved public open space in the city centre blurring the boundary between placemaking, regeneration and resilience.
This award is presented to the project best demonstrating the principles of sustainability, i.e. social, economic and environmental benefits during delivery and on completion.

The village of Llansannan had suffered from significant flood events for over a decade. Employment of an experienced local contractor and a partnership approach with the client allowed work on this project to be safely and efficiently completed whilst maintaining good relationships with residential frontagers.
This award is presented to the best example of outstanding design and construction of a project costing less than £5 million. This award was named after Colonel Roy Edwards who was the longest serving member of the South Wales Association committee and first territorial member of the Institution’s Council (1949-54).

This part of the M4 is a key link and essential to the economy of South Wales. Challenging access constraints for labour, heavy construction plant and materials on this project were overcome to place 20 steel box beams beneath the bridge with minimal disturbance to traffic.
This award is presented to the best example of outstanding design and construction of a project costing more than £5 million. This award honours the highly respected ICE member George H Gibby (1923-2010), who originally proposed the idea of an awards scheme to celebrate civil engineering.
