The ICE invites professionally qualified members to join our further learning assessment team as exam script markers or experiential learning assessors.
Further learning routes help civil engineers who are aspiring to become Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered (CEng) but do not have the required academic qualifications.
We need professionally qualified members to assess candidates for ‘further learning’ towards their academic base.
Why get involved?
Volunteering as an assessor or script marker is a great way to:
- Contribute to your own Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Stay current with industry developments
- Uphold professional standards in a rewarding way
Many aspiring engineers have the skills and experience to meet the requirements of professional qualification but lack the formal academic base. ICE’s further learning assessments recognise this and evaluate candidates against the Engineering Council’s Learning Outcomes - based on their professional development and work experience.
We have two volunteering roles available to support this pathway to professional qualification
- Experiential learning assessor
- Assess written submissions from candidates working towards IEng MICE or CEng MICE
- Paired with another assessor
- Assessors will typically assess around 12 written submissions per year.
- Email [email protected] for more information
- Further learning exam script marker
- Assess candidates working towards CEng MICE
- Script marking occurs in: March and October
- Commitment: minimum of marking 2 exams in March and October

Assessors need to be competent, experienced and professionally qualified ICE members (CEng and IEng) and professionally active. You will look at candidates' written submissions to determine if they have demonstrated the required standard.
It has been great to continue to support the ICE and give that feeling of supporting and giving back to the future generation.
But on a personal level, it has helped me develop communication skills and also take this into the workplace to support candidates through other routes of ICE towards professional status.
