Professional conduct

We take the conduct of our members very seriously. Being a member of the ICE means that a civil engineer has proved that they can work to the highest possible standards.

Improper conduct

'Improper conduct' means conduct which shows that a member of the ICE has not been honest, trustworthy or ethical in the way that their work was done or in some other way that relates to their work.

It also can refer to a failure to adequately safeguard the health and safety of a client or any other person.

A member of the ICE who's been found guilty of a criminal offence may also be guilty of improper conduct.

Even if the criminal offence has nothing to do directly with their work. It will depend on what the member of the ICE has done.

Professional Conduct Panel

The Professional Conduct Panel is made up of between 10 and 12 Fellows of the institution.

It's one of several member-led panels and committees at the ICE.

Its role is to investigate any formal allegations of professional misconduct made against a member and determine whether it discloses a case to answer.

If the panel finds that there might be a case for a member to answer, it may refer matters to the ICE's disciplinary board.

Disciplinary board

The Disciplinary Board is a key body within the ICE, tasked with adjudicating cases of professional misconduct identified by the Professional Conduct Panel.

The board's operations and structure are dictated by the ICE Disciplinary Regulations.

It hears cases referred by the Professional Conduct Panel to determine the appropriate sanctions or corrective measures, ensuring adherence to the ICE Code of Professional Conduct.

If an allegation is made against a member, this will be investigated by the Professional Conduct Panel.
