ICE Futures

A website for exploring the endless possibilities of careers in civil engineering.

What is ICE Futures?

ICE Futures is a free, interactive website where young people can explore the possibilities of a career in civil engineering.

It brings civil engineering careers to life with character-led storytelling, in a dynamic 3D city with relatable role models.

By providing clear, bite-sized insights, it helps students understand the tangible impact of civil engineering and the role they can play in shaping the future.

It demonstrates how civil engineering can deliver clean energy, sustainable development and environmentally-friendly living spaces.

ICE Futures also guides learners to more in-depth activities and resources for understanding civil engineering, like the ICE’s virtual work experience, the ICE CityZen competitions, and to find out more about civil engineers and the work they do.

Who is ICE Futures for?

The website is for young people exploring their career options, whether further education, university, apprenticeships or entering the workplace. It can be shared in classrooms or as an interactive journey to explore in their own free time.

ICE Futures serves as a resource for schools, colleges, teachers and careers advisors to showcase how school subjects relate to engineering careers in the built environment.

It’s also a tool for inspiring young people to think about our world and how we manage our resources.

ICE Futures is a valuable tool for ICE STEM ambassadors and organisations who deliver schools outreach programmes. They ambassadors can introduce the resource when visiting schools to spark discussions and share it widely with their school contacts.

How to play

The website runs on any PC, tablet or mobile device and is free to use with no registration necessary.

It’s most fun to use on a tablet or computer with a touchscreen. It will take around 10 to 15 minutes for most students to explore the interactive story without looking at the additional case studies and videos.

Students will step into the world of civil engineering through the experiences of Mae, Omar, and Robyn - three young engineers shaping the future.

Follow each character’s journey as they use their passions to fuel different civil engineering projects across the city of Brighthaven.

Click on each character to see their journey:

Students will learn and grow with each character through different stages of their career, as they harness the transformative power of civil engineering.

As students navigate their stories, they’ll see how civil engineers tackle global challenges such as climate change, transport and urban development.

What students are saying?

I was impressed by how the characters impacted the city at different stages of their career over time.

Year 12, John Warner School

I liked how each character described their interests and what they did in school. It gave me a better understanding of what subjects can be useful if you want to be a civil engineer.
