There are around 2,340 ICE members living in Australia and working on a huge range of projects across the country.
At the heart of everything we do in Australia are the five ICE representatives and Local Associations, based in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. They help arrange learned society events, visits to ongoing engineering projects and social activities. They also play a vital role in helping to increase the profile of civil engineering.
As well as the Local Associations, there are several ICE graduate and student groups that support members working towards professional qualification. Professional Review interviews are held annually in Australia, most recently in Sydney and Perth.
Our staff based in Australia support our work in the Australasia region. This includes co-coordinating activities with our members in Australia, supporting our committees and providing membership advice. Staff also support companies running ICE training schemes in the region. For more details please contact us.

If you're considering moving to work in Australia, you will first need to ensure that you meet the relevant migration requirements for the role you intend to do. Australia’s migration criteria for civil engineers place a high emphasis on your engineering academic qualifications and their relevance to the field in which you intend to practise.
If you hold an accredited engineering degree which should be recognised under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord, please make sure you state this explicitly in your visa application.
For UK courses the entry in the Engineering Council Course Search specifies under which Accord it can be recognised. Please note that if your course is listed as “CEng (requires further learning)”, then you must also hold a further learning course listed as “CEng (is further learning)” in order for it to be recognised under the Washington Accord.
For non-UK courses, please check the website of the relevant national engineering accreditation body.
If you hold one or more unaccredited courses, or your course(s) are not accredited for the level or in the area in which you intend to practise, you should expect to have to pass a Migration Skills Assessment before a visa would be granted. This assessment must be conducted by an authority approved by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. For the occupation of Civil Engineer, this assessment has to be done by Engineers Australia. Assessment for the occupations of Civil Engineering Draftsperson or Civil Engineering Technician can be done by VETASSESS.
Please note that your MICE status or the result of an ICE academic assessment or experiential learning assessment is not recognised for migration/visa purposes.
To be registered as a Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) under the Professional Engineers Act 2002 (PE Act) candidates must be assessed by an Entity which has been approved by the Minister for Housing and Public Works.
Find out more about registration in Queensland
To be registered as a Professional Engineer in Victoria under the Professional Engineer Registration Act 2019 (PER Act) candidates must have their qualifications, experience and competencies assessed by an Assessment Entity which has been approved by the Victorian Government’s Business Licensing Authority (BLA).
Find out more about registration in Victoria
As an Assessment Entity the Institution of Civil Engineers will comply with the Schemes when assessing candidates for Professional Engineers Registration in Queensland and Victoria.
ICE has over 2000 members living and working in Australia, a dedicated Australasia Manager, and a network of volunteer members to support you. We work closely with Engineers Australia to jointly support the wider civil engineering community. Please visit our dedicated ICE Australia page for more information on the latest events and activities.
Although Engineers Australia is the national engineering body, many of our members will continue to work towards ICE professional qualification or progress to other ICE grades whilst living and working in Australia, particularly those who only plan to stay for a limited period or intend to return to the UK or home country in due course. If you need any support or advice to progress your membership whilst in Australia please contact [email protected].
If you are currently on an ICE training agreement and have any questions about partially completing or transferring your training whilst working in Australia, please get in touch with us at [email protected] .

Matthew (Matt) Colton is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Engineers Australia and was previously on council at the ICE representing Asia Pacific’s 1,700 members.
Over the past four years, Matt has developed several successful avenues to increase international membership. With an aim to sustainably improve our built environment, Matt works closely with other internationally reputable professional organisations to identify synergies and positively influence political vision to benefit our wider society.
Matt has been heavily involved with the ICE since 2010, when he was elected as Chair of the New South Wales (NSW) ICE Local Association Committee. Through this role, Matt brought governance, structure and improved opportunities for ICE-NSW members, increasing the active membership by 40 per cent. He was appointed as the ICE NSW Representative in 2015. During this time Matt curated and delivered the ICE Asia Pacific Conference in 2018 as part of the ICE’s Bicentenary Celebrations in Sydney.
Matt sits on a series of international expert panels including NEC Contract. He is also an ICE Mentor and Professional Reviewer, promoting the importance of maintaining our Institution’s highest professional standards and superior reputation as the premier international engineering and infrastructure professional qualifying body.
In 2017, Matt won the Warren Medal in recognition of his valuable service to the NSW region. Professionally, Matt has delivered a wide variety of civil engineering schemes including earthworks, bridges, viaducts, tunnelling and sea defence schemes. He has been involved with significant projects in both the UK and Australia including Birmingham New Street Station, London Bridge Station and Parramatta & Newcastle Light Rail.
Matt is the Managing Director of Management Commercial Engineering (MCE), a highly regarded infrastructure advisory business based in Sydney, New South Wales. He is currently the Engineering Director for Sydney Metro West program, the biggest public transport project in Australia. The project consists of a fully automated metro rail system (a first in Australia) that will increase Sydney's rail capacity by up to 60 per cent by 2024.
Susan is a Technical Executive (Strategic Asset Management) at WSP in Queensland and is currently the Asset Manager for a large state road maintenance contract.
