Overview

Join us for our annual event, bringing together members of the Institution of Civil Engineers Scotland (Tayside and Fife branch) and the Institute of Asphalt Technology.

This event features a presentation from guest speaker John Cook. A pillar of John’s considerable career in recent years has been the ongoing refinement of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s airfield pavement specifications.

This is a suite of documents used for Ministry of Defence airfields, which define the material, mix and construction requirements for asphalt, concrete and composite pavement systems.

These documents complement design and maintenance guides and cover aspects such as hot-rolled and Marshall asphalt through to friction courses and recycled bound materials.

John Cook

John Cook has enjoyed a successful career in airfield pavement engineering in the UK.

As the long-serving head airfields pavements engineer for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, he has shaped standards that have kept military runways safe and operational across the UK and overseas.

John’s career began in structural design before he moved into the specialised world of airfield pavements in 1979. He has become a respected voice on balancing operational risk, constructability, and long-term durability on safety-critical surfaces.

Now retired, John still has plenty to say about where the discipline has come from and where it’s heading.
