The New Cut is an early 19th century diversion of the River Avon around the centre of Bristol which helped form the static Bristol Harbour. The riverbanks beside the southern abutment sit on a long‑running, slow‑moving landslide that has been creeping toward the River Avon for decades, threatening the stability of the river walls and key infrastructure.
Bristol City Council is restoring eight bridges that cross the New Cut over 5 years. The restored Langton Street Bridge, known as the Banana Bridge, was reopened on 20 June 2025.
The session will outline how Stantec's geotechnical team investigated the ground conditions, monitored ongoing movement, and designed a combination of sheet pile walls, screw piles, scour protection and other mitigation works to manage highly variable ground conditions, tidal fluctuations and complex buried services.
The talk will provide valuable insights into real world landslide mitigation, unstable historic structures, geotechnical design under constrained urban conditions, and the challenges of maintaining infrastructure along the New Cut.
The site visit will include a short walk and an external viewing of the works from public areas. No PPE is required.
Both the presentation and the site visit are accessible.
