Overview

This event will provide an overview of the optioneering phase undertaken for the tunnelling solutions aimed at mitigating Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) discharges into the River Severn in Shrewsbury.

There will be an emphasis on the assessment of pipe jacking opportunities, including proposals that range from full-scale tunnel alternatives to smaller, localised interventions.

The presentation will cover key considerations, constraints and opportunities, alongside a comparative evaluation of the relative merits of each proposed solution.

Following the event, a networking session with food and drinks will be held at ICE Kendal's bar, sponsored by COWI and the Pipe Jacking Association.

Matthew Donnachie

Matthew Donnachie is a Chartered Civil Engineer with 12 years of experience in civil and geotechnical design. He began his career with Arcadis as an apprentice at 17, developing a keen interest in tunnelling after seeing one of the 7m diameter TBMs breakthrough at the Al Mater Metro station during a secondment in Doha. Following this, Matthew joined COWI in 2016 and for the past 10 years has gained both design and site experience across a wide range of tunnel and underground schemes. His experience includes pipe jacking, horizontal directional drilling, auger boring, and shaft design, primarily on small to medium scale projects. Matthew has led the optioneering of the alternative solutions on the Shrewsbury project focusing on localised trenchless interventions.

Max Hepburn is a Chartered Civil Engineer with around 10 years of experience. After graduating in 2016, Max began his career at Arup, where he gained site and design experience across a wide range of civil engineering projects, including major marine structures, flood defence schemes, and various other civil structures. In 2022, he joined COWI, where his experience has been primarily on the design of underground structures and tunnelling. Max led the design development for the fully tunnelled solutions on the Shrewsbury project during the optioneering phase, which included both bored tunnel and pipe jacking options.
