Overview

Funded by the East-West Center and delivered in collaboration with Women In Architecture & Engineering (WAE) and YSEALI AFP Alumni, the Sponge City Innovation Challenge is an innovation-driven competition that encourages students and young professionals to develop sustainable urban solutions inspired by the “sponge city” concept—an approach that enhances a city’s ability to absorb, store, and reuse rainwater through green infrastructure and nature-based systems.

This challenge aims to promote climate resilience, particularly in addressing urban flooding, water scarcity, and environmental degradation, by integrating engineering, design, and sustainability principles. Participants tackle critical stormwater management challenges through water-sensitive urban design strategies, including rain gardens, permeable pathways, and increased biodiversity.

The program features expert-led workshops, site surveys, collaborative design development, and research writing. It culminates in a final presentation to a panel of experts. The challenge equips emerging leaders with practical, long-term skills to reduce flooding and promote sustainable development policies across the region by integrating nature into urban environments and strengthening community resilience.
