Hidden for over 70 years, Cardiff’s dock feeder canal has been unveiled and brought back into the light, forming the heart of a transformative place regeneration project: ‘The Canal Quarter’.
Constructed in the mid-19th century, the dock feeder is an integral part of Cardiff’s maritime history and was built to supply water to the Bute Docks – an intervention that turned Cardiff from a small coastal town into the country’s principal city.
In 2020, Cardiff Council commissioned AtkinsRéalis to design this landmark project, celebrating and redefining the dock feeder canal. The design team worked on the project from concept to delivery, with practical completion being achieved in May 2024. Over a year on, the project is proving to be a popular destination for visitors to Cardiff city centre and is nurturing sustainable development opportunities in the area. It is also helping Cardiff to mitigate the impacts of climate change through a range of nature-based solutions.
In this webinar, Jeremy Jones and Ben Ferguson from AtkinsRéalis will discuss the history behind the project, the design, the construction processes, and the ways in which the space has become a welcoming space for people and nature.
