At its inception, the Coire Glas Exploratory Works was a short project, but by no means unambitious, to undertake detailed ground investigation in an area where normal methods simply wouldn’t work.
Owing to the vast underground structures planned for the wider Coire Glas Pumped Storage scheme, and the mountainous terrain above, a bold package of GI was put together to de-risk the future works. This included a significant campaign of surface drilling, in difficult to access locations (completed by Fugro), and the construction of a 900m Exploratory Adit, accessing deep under the mountain.
This lecture will run through the full story of the construction of the Exploratory Adit, which proved to be very much as its namesake; exploration. With a large fault zone encountered at over 700m in, and an extension to the tunnel length for a broader scope of exploratory drilling and in-situ geological testing, the project was filled with interest.
Note: For in-person attendance, advance booking is not required; please register on arrival. To attend online, kindly use the ‘Book now’ button.
Following the lecture, there will be a networking session with food and drinks in the ICE Kendal's bar, sponsored by Strabag.

Strabag
tunnel agent
Between studying Mining Engineering in Cornwall, and joining the Coire Glas project in the Highlands of Scotland, Joe has worked underground across the full length of the UK.
His 10 years in the industry have been wide ranging, including SCL tunnelling at Whitechapel and Liverpool Street Stations for Crossrail, and TBM experience on the cooling water tunnels for Hinkley Point C and the MTS Drive for the Woodsmith Project.
Those who know Joe will understand Coire Glas was an obvious dream project, as not only is he enthusiastic about drill and blast works, but when he’s not underneath the mountains, he’s often found clinging onto the side of them by his fingertips or ice axes.
Strabag
engineering and technical manager
Tom is a chartered geologist with 14 years tunnelling experience. Tom is an experienced onsite manager of tunnelling and geotechnical works, including SCL and TBM tunnel production in a broad range of ground conditions from soft clays and running sands to hard rock, and managing ground investigations (GI) in hard rock.
Tom led the procurement, planning and onsite management of the Coire Glas Exploratory Works GI phase for STRABAG UK Ltd, culminating in submission of the final factual GI report in May 2025.
Tom also has experience in quantity and cost estimation for shaft sinking and underground cavern construction, tender design management, onsite design supervision of SCL works and design integration for mechanical/electrical works for shaft/tunnel fitout.
SSE Renewables
engineering geologist
Sean is a Chartered Geologist and has 10 years’ experience in the civil engineering and construction industry. Prior to joining SSE Renewables in 2022,
Sean worked as an Engineering Geologist for Fairhurst, gaining experience in ground investigation design, management and supervision, geotechnical design and construction site supervision across a variety of sectors.
Since joining SSER, Sean has been working on the Coire Glas hydro pumped storage scheme, specifically the Exploratory Works.
This role has involved site inspections/supervision, liaising with designers and contractors, carrying out technical / design reviews, and management of geotechnical risk.
Stantec
senior engineering geologist
Tom Taplin is a senior engineering geologist at Stantec UK, formerly working on the Coire Glas Exploratory Adit.
Tom graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a BEng in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics in 2018. Following graduating, Tom joined Stantec UK in 2019, working on several infrastructure projects as a Geotechnical Engineer across the South and East of England.
In 2023, Tom joined the Coire Glas project as a full-time site-based Engineering Geologist with Stantec-COWI, providing site support from the designer’s side, focusing on building the ground model and determining required tunnel support.
