Overview

What if our public roads could borrow the performance, smoothness, and durability of Formula 1 circuits?

This presentation draws on a decade of experience across F1 circuits, global airports, and highways to examine how motorsport technology and methodologies can revolutionise road construction. Dr Campbell Waddell, managing director of R3 Ltd, will explore how innovations in track simulation, design and machine control — pioneered on the world’s fastest racetracks — are being applied to everyday road infrastructure.
Key themes will include:

  • Translating racetrack grip and surface insights into longer-lasting road pavements
  • Leveraging machine control to reduce construction variability and surface roughness.
  • Using motorsport-style simulation tools to optimise road surface design and safety.
  • Lessons from F1 in lifecycle thinking and high-performance surface engineering.

Drawing on R3’s experience with circuits like Silverstone, Imola and Donnington, as well as road and airport projects worldwide, Campbell will show how motorsport leads the way in pushing the boundaries of design, build quality and performance monitoring — and why these principles are now within reach for roads.

Dr Campbell Waddell

Dr Campbell Waddell is managing director of R3 Ltd and a post-doctoral researcher at Ulster University, where he completed his PhD on “The Grip of Motorsport Surfaces” in 2019.

With over a decade of international experience, Campbell has led pavement assessment and improvement projects across roads, racetracks, and airports — from F1 circuits and military runways to highways and civil infrastructure.

He is a recognised expert in surface characteristics, serving on both the BSI Surface Characteristics Committee and the FIA’s Industry Working Group for Racetrack Safety. At R3, Campbell leads the development of innovative tools like TrackWalk and AeroMonitor, bringing data-driven insights to surface performance, asset management and design optimisation.

His work is at the cutting edge of applying motorsport precision and technology to real-world infrastructure challenges
