Overview

This seminar introduces two advanced and relatively cost-effective (affordable luxury) material and structural solutions – stainless steel & additive manufacturing. It examines under-utilised stainless steel materials as viable alternatives to austenitic/duplex stainless steel and carbon steel in construction.

The seminar reviews applications ranging from bridges to building facades, comparing material cost, corrosion resistance, and life-cycle cost, showing lean duplex and ferritic grades excelling in mildly to intermediate corrosive environments. Mechanical properties under ambient and elevated temperatures are presented, and experimental data show lean duplex offering superior fire resistance to ferritic grades, while ferritic stainless steel has excellent post-fire residual capacity.

The seminar also introduces the latest metal wire additive manufacturing techniques for structural fabrication and hybrid-steel solutions, which are relatively cost-effective and practical options for large-scale structures with complicated geometry. By integrating material science, structural testing, and design codes, this seminar equips engineers and researchers to confidently specify stainless steels and metal additive manufacturing as high-performance and cost-effective solutions for sustainable structural systems.

Technical Report Prize 

The event is designated by the HKA committee and is eligible for the Technical Report Prize. ICE HKA awards prizes to ICE members who reside in Hong Kong and prepare reports of a high standard on the caption technical event. Winners will be given a prize of HK$800.

Yuner Huang

Prof Yuner Huang is an associate professor at Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a honorary lecturer at School of Engineering in University of Edinburgh. She obtained her BEng (2009) and PhD (2013) degrees from The University of Hong Kong, and had been working in University of Edinburgh during 2015-2024.

She is a chartered engineer, member of Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (MHKIE), American Society of Civil Engineers (MASCE) and Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

She serves as an associate editor of ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology (JPVT), editorial board member of Journal of Constructional Steel Research (JCSR) and Thin-Walled Structures (TWS).

She has published over 80 journal articles. Her research interests include steel structures, low-carbon construction and climate resilience of buildings. Her research project REBEC has been selected as “feature project” by Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Interdisciplinary Frontiers programme in 2020.

She received “Covid-19 Engineering Award” for her project CovSteel in 2022, and “Research Impact Prize” for her project RC3 in 2025.
