Overview

Join ICE director general Dr. Janet Young as she visits the North East to learn about the outstanding civil engineering work going on in the region.

This event will explore the design and delivery of the South Bank Watercourse at Teesworks, one of the UK’s largest brownfield regeneration sites.

The presentation will show how a complex drainage and ground engineering challenge — requiring excavation up to 8 m below platform level within contaminated made ground — was successfully addressed through a combination of sustainable design and collaborative delivery.

The session will examine how the project team moved beyond conventional approaches to develop a lower carbon solution, including the large scale reuse of site won materials and the integration of nature based elements to improve resilience and environmental performance.

Attendees will gain insight into how engineering, environmental and construction disciplines were brought together from the earliest strategy stage to ensure the scheme was both deliverable and sustainable.

The presentation will also reflect on key lessons learned, including managing risk in constrained industrial environments, working with the supply chain to implement innovative solutions, and balancing technical performance with long term sustainability outcomes.
