Overview

This presentation will provide an overview of the South West Rail Resilience Programme, established by Network Rail, focusing on key projects delivered by BAM to improve the resilience of the region's critical rail link along the coast of South Devon.

The session will focus on three principal schemes: the Marine Parade sea wall, the Coastguard to Colonnade sea wall and the Dawlish to Holcombe cliff stabilisation works.

For each scheme, the webinar will explore the unique technical and logistical challenges, including design approaches, design life and the complexities of construction in a constrained and highly exposed marine environment.

The session will also highlight how these challenges were addressed through innovative engineering solutions, careful planning and collaborative delivery.

This webinar is part of the ICE South West Lunch & Learn series.

Joining instructions and Microsoft Teams link and password will be sent out the day before.

Yan graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2004 with a Master’s degree in civil and structural engineering. He began his career in Yorkshire with John Mowlem PLC (later Carillion), working on a range of civil engineering projects before relocating to the South West in 2008.

Following the move, he continued with Carillion, delivering a wide variety of predominantly railway projects across the region. After 12 years, he joined BAM in late 2016 to work closer to home, initially contributing to the Bristol Parkway Capacity Enhancement scheme.

Towards the end of this project, Yan was given the opportunity to lead BAM’s tender for the first phase of the South West Rail Resilience Programme, successfully securing the Marine Parade section in early 2019. This marked the beginning of almost seven years working in Dawlish, delivering three phases of seawall construction and one phase of cliff stabilisation along this iconic and critical stretch of railway.
