Overview

Join the ICE West Midlands Hereford and Worcester Branch for an overview of the design and construction involved in expanding the West Midlands tram network. This talk will place particular focus on recent and current engineering achievements for the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension.

The works completed by Midland Metro Alliance (MMA), have involved a variety of challenges including the construction of several new landmark bridges, overcoming challenging geotechnical conditions and working within constrained city centre and urban corridor environments.

Tony Gee, as structural designers for MMA, will provide an introduction to the structural works already designed for the tram expansion.

Hear from:

  • David Smaller, associate director at Tony Gee
  • Richard Ellis, associate at Tony Gee
  • Tim Betts, senior project manager at Colas Rail

From the initial challenges faced within Birmingham city centre, the presentation will focus on works along the Wednesbury Brierley Hill extension (WBHE) with an overview of the magnitude of structural engineering works completed to reinstate the corridor. Delivering this has required the design of new bridges, deck reconstructions, assessments, strengthening works, and geotechnical measures.

The works for WBHE include several large viaducts, up to 300 metres long and complex interchange structures.

This presentation will focus on the design and detailing of the viaducts and will include an update from the MMA delivery team on the progress and challenges of constructing these structures.
