ICE’s work based learning routes are open to experienced engineers who are looking to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) or an Incorporated Engineer (IEng MICE) with ICE but don’t have the required academic qualifications.
The knowledge and experience you have gained at work can help you to become professionally qualified. It can bridge the gap between the qualifications you already have and the knowledge you need for either CEng or IEng.
This route is based on knowledge gained at work: you must show how your work-based experience gives you the same level of engineering knowledge and skills as someone who is educationally qualified for the grade you are applying for. Your submission can be made retrospectively, or learning can be planned and recorded over time to bring you up to the right level. In either case, you will need support from a mentor.
To be able to progress along this route, you will have at least five years’ experience working in the civil engineering industry.
Following a successful Experiential Learning Assessment, you will be able to complete your Initial Professional Development and progress to Professional Review.
This route is open to those seeking to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) who are able to meet the further learning requirements by studying for and passing our Further Learning Exam (FLE).
Further learning is described as an accredited a 'top up' from a programme which is accredited as partially meeting the academic requirements for the grade of registration you are aiming for.
The ICE FLE tests whether graduates with a bachelor’s degree accredited for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer, and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer, have gained the knowledge to progress to Chartered Engineer status.
You will have at least two years’ experience working in the civil engineering industry.
Candidates are encouraged to complete a series of online learning modules before taking the exam.

However, preparing the learning outcomes and reflective statements as part of my Experiential Learning submission really helped me refine that skill. It made writing my Professional Review Report for CEng a whole lot easier, as I could identify the skills and experience I had gained more easily and focus on those details.
