We have compiled a list of some common questions that you may have.
No, you do not need to submit any additional evidence as part of your training agreement/mentor supported training if you have completed it against the “old” attributes. You will need to reference the UNSDGs in the Sustainable Development part of your Professional Review report, when you apply for your Professional Review.
No. All you do need to do is to make sure that you understand the current requirements of the Professional Review, and that your experience meets the attributes for this review. However, it’s always good to speak with your local ICE Membership team who can offer specific guidance and support.
This document shows how the 5 Standards for EngTech MICE are displayed in IPD online. Trainees who have started in this system, will work within this system until a full completion of their Training Agreement or Mentor Supported Training.

ICE is currently working to update the Membership database which supports IPD Online. This is a complex IT project, and it is important that it is implemented and tested fully before we can launch the new IPD Online with the 7 attributes in spring 2025.
Existing trainees and new trainees up to the launch of the new IPD Online will continue to use the existing system, which has been updated to ensure it is compatible with the latest standards. To be specific, from 1 October 2021, the statements under the 9 attribute headings have been updated to reflect the ‘7 attribute’ wording, but the structure of IPD Online has remained the same with 9 attribute headings. To give two examples:
- “Identify the limits of their personal knowledge and skills” will appear under attribute 7 for professional commitment, but will be retained under old attribute 4 for Independent Judgement and Responsibility in the 9 attribute framework
- “Implement or construct design solutions and contribute to their evaluation” under attribute 2 will be updated to match the new standard which states “Implement engineering solutions, and evaluate their effectiveness in the context of the whole project life cycle”
The updated 9 attribute version is now fully compatible with the new standards and therefore trainees will continue in this system until full completion of their training agreement or mentor supported training.
As an existing trainee using the 9 attribute IPD Online you will continue to record your experience under the 9 attribute headings once you have started, through to full completion of your training agreement.
However, on 1 October 2021 changes will be made to the current system and, despite the structure of IPD Online staying with 9 attribute headings, the statements supporting the attributes have been updated to reflect the wording in the attribute statements required for Professional Review at IEng and CEng. You will not be disadvantaged in any way.
There is no need for you to change what you have already uploaded.
You will remain in your current IPD Online system until you complete your training agreement, with the reassurance that the updated wording will reflect the current Professional Review requirements.
No, it’s best to start straight away and begin to record your experience.
There is no disadvantage for trainees following IPD Online with 9 attribute headings, as we have updated the supporting attribute statements to mirror those of the attribute statements for Professional Review at IEng and CEng.
In this case if you start a new TA at CEng level then you will see 9 areas and attribute headings in IPD Online, but with the new updated wording.
Your new TA/MST will be against the 7 attributes. You will need to achieve the CEng ability level only (Ac) – there is no need to input evidence for the K, E and Ai levels. You will have access to your previous evidence against the “old” 9 attribute system.

In this case you will continue to see 9 areas and 9 attribute headings in IPD Online, but with the updated wording for the supporting statements and you will continue to add evidence to demonstrate the updated wording.
In this case you will still see 9 areas and 9 attribute headings in IPD Online, and you will continue to add evidence to demonstrate the updated wording.
If your training agreement started using the 9 attribute system, then when it is reactivated you will still see the 9 areas for the attributes and all your evidence will be visible.
Anyone applying for Professional Review at IEng and CEng will now sit a written Communication Task. IEng and CEng candidates will both be given two questions and asked to answer one of them. IEng candidates will have 60 minutes to write a factual answer. CEng candidates will have 90 minutes to produce a written response of their ideas and opinions on a given scenario.
No. End Point Assessments (EPAs) will remain as described in the assessment plan for each standard.
While there will be no change to the EPAs at Levels 3 and 4, if you are applying for EngTech MICE alongside your Railway Engineering Design Technician and version 1.1 of the Civil Engineering Technician EPA, you will need to demonstrate commitment to the Code of Professional Conduct and be ready to discuss environmental impact under sustainable development.
There will be no change to the EPAs at Level 6, but if you are applying for IEng MICE alongside your EPA you will need to demonstrate how you can evaluate the effectiveness of engineering solutions in the context of the whole project life cycle; how you contribute to quality improvements, contribute to improvements in Health, Safety and Welfare; contribute to UNSDGs, and how you engage with ICE activities.
For applications for EngTech MICE, you will need to fulfil the CPD requirements for a technician as described in our Technician Professional Review guidance.
Degree apprentices will need to continue to fulfil the CPD requirements described in the apprenticeship standard assessment plans until such time as the plans are amended or the standards are renewed.
Yes, you will access all your trainees from the same place.
