What you need to do depends on:
- What grade of membership you had
- How long ago it ended
If your membership ended less than 10 months ago, you can reinstate it online via 'My subscriptions'.

If your membership ended more than 10 months ago click on the relevant tab below.
We can extend your free student membership if you are still studying, or you can apply for Graduate membership if you have completed your studies. Simply email [email protected] and provide the following details:
- ICE membership number
- Name of the university/college and title of your course
- Attendance type
- Course start date
- Expected graduation date
To reinstate your GMICE or AMICE membership you need to:
- Check that we have correct details about your academic and/or professional qualifications
- Pay the relevant fees
Please see our fees pages for details of any reinstatement fees to pay and, the current year’s subscription (payable on a pro-rata basis). You can pay by contacting Membership Services on +44 (0)20 7665 2227.
If you are entitled to a concession, please fill in the reduced subscription fee application form and send it to [email protected] or Membership Services Department, ICE, One Great George Street, London SW1P 3AA.
If you were a Graduate member on a training agreement and also want to reinstate that, please email your request to [email protected] once your GMICE has been reinstated.
If you were a professionally qualified member (MICE or EngTech/IEng/CEng MICE or CEnv MICE), what you need to do to re-join depends on how long it has been since your membership ended.
Your membership is deemed to have ended on 01 January of the first year that your subscriptions were not paid.

Ended up to 12 months ago
If your membership ended less than 9 months ago, you can reinstate it online via 'My subscriptions'.
After 9 months, you will need to contact Membership Services on +44 (0)20 7665 2227 or email [email protected] to pay your outstanding subscriptions / fees and reinstate. Please note that you will be charged an additional reinstatement fee after 31 October, to cover the extra administrative tasks necessary to continue membership and registration.
Ended between 12 months and three years ago
If you have been off the ICE membership roll between 12 months and three years, you will need to show us what you have been doing.
You can do this by sending the following documents to [email protected].
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
- A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
We will assess your submission. If there is not enough information to make a decision, we may ask you to provide more information or to attend an interview. The interview helps ICE to assess you against the attributes or standards required for your membership grade.
If your application is approved you will be re-admitted on payment of the necessary fees.
Ended more than three years ago
If your membership ended more than three years ago, you will need to demonstrate that through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence for the membership grade you are reinstating. You will need to send the following documents to [email protected]:
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
- A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
- A 1,000 word report which demonstrates, with reference to the relevant membership attributes or standards, how through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence
- Completed questionnaire forms for the relevant grade filled out by two sponsors
- Certified copies of your academic qualifications
- Reinstatement Interview fee
We will assess your submission and confirm whether you need to provide any further documentation. Once we have what we need we will ask you to attend an interview. The interview will be against the attributes or standards for the membership grade you are reinstating to.
Once your reinstatement has been approved you will need to pay a reinstatement fee*, before we can fully complete your reinstatement.
* This will include the current year's subscription and outstanding Engineering Council subscription charges (if applicable).
Engineering Council
If you are a current professionally qualified ICE member and only want to reinstate your registration with the Engineering Council (EngTech/IEng/CEng), you need to use the appropriate application form and follow the same process as outlined above depending on when your registration ended.

Chartered Environmentalist registration only
If you are a current professionally qualified ICE member and only want to reinstate your registration with the Society for the Environment (CEnv), you need to follow the same process as outlined above depending on when your registration ended.

Retired members
If you are retired and you want to re-join, you will need to follow the process outlined above, depending on when your membership ended, except that you do not need to send us any CPD records.
Please ensure that you sign a declaration under our Code of Professional Conduct in the application form.
Applying for a higher grade
If you want to apply for a higher grade you can apply directly if you wish. If you are successful in applying for a higher grade, you will still have to pay a reinstatement fee together with the appropriate:
- ICE subscription fee
- Engineering Council registration fee (if applicable)
Professionally-qualified with another engineering body?
If you have registered directly with another Engineering Council professional engineering institution or one of our a Mutual recognition partners since lapsing your ICE membership, you may prefer to apply for recognition of that status rather than reinstating.
Please check the relevant webpage for the criteria and guidance on how to apply. Please note however that you must follow the reinstatement process outlined above if you wish to regain your Chartered Civil Engineer title in addition to CEng MICE.
Fees
You will need to pay a reinstatement fee, a professional review interview fee (if applicable), plus the current year's subscription fee (payable on a pro-rata basis) and any Engineering Council subscription charges (if applicable), before you can re-join.
The current year’s fees will be pro-rated. Check the current fees.
If you were a Fellow (FICE) or professionally qualified Fellow (EngTech/IEng/CEng FICE/CEnv FICE), what you need to do to re-join depends on how long it has been since your membership ended.

- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
- A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
- A 1,000 word report which demonstrates, with reference to the relevant membership attributes or standards (not the Fellowship attributes), how through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence
- Completed Fellowship sponsor questionnaire filled out by two sponsors (please email [email protected] for the questionnaire to be sent to you)
- Certified copies of your academic qualifications
- Reinstatement Interview fee
We will assess your submission and confirm whether you need to provide any further documentation. Once we have all we need we will ask you to attend an interview. The interview will be against the attributes or standards for the professional qualification you are reinstating to.

FICE only
If you were a direct entry FICE only member and have been off the ICE membership roll for more than 10 months, you will need to show us what you have been doing.
You can do this by sending the following documents to [email protected]:
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD)records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
We will assess your submission. If there is not enough information to make a decision, we may ask you to provide more information.
If your application is approved you will be re-admitted on payment of the necessary fees.
Retired members
If you are retired and you want to re-join, you need to follow the relevant process outlined above, but you do not need to submit CPD records.
