Educational base

The educational base for each grade of membership is different. For example, you need to have higher level qualifications to apply as a Member than you do as an Technician Member.

If you also want to register with the Engineering Council – as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), for example – or the Society for the Environment, your qualifications will also have to meet their requirements.

If you don't have any qualifications but have experience in civil engineering, you can apply for membership through the Technical Report Route. This involves writing a report to show your experience, knowledge and understanding of engineering principles.

We will then assess whether you have the same knowledge as someone who has an accredited bachelor degree for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or accredited bachelor and masters degree for CEng.

Student Member

You can become a Student Member if you’re studying a degree programme in any subject. If you’re studying for a diploma or doing an apprenticeship, it must be in engineering or construction.

Graduate Member

You can become a Graduate Member if you have the right qualifications to apply for our Technician Member, or Member grades – see below.

ICE Technician Member (MICE) and registration with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech)

You'll need one of the following:

• An Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or other approved work-based learning programmes
• BTEC/SQA National Certificate or Diploma in one of the construction pathways, or an approved Scottish/National Vocational Qualification (S/NVQ) at Level 3-6
• Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians (Institution of Civil Engineers) (QCF)
• Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (QCF) – this used to be called a BTEC National Diploma
• Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (QCF) – this used to be called a BTEC National Certificate
• National Diploma or Certificate in Civil Engineering
• Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering pathway), or Engineering
• An approved higher qualification, such as a foundation degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering
• An approved NVQ3 or SVQ3

If you have an overseas degree or diploma that’s not accredited, you can apply to have your qualifications assessed to see if they meet the minimum standard.

ICE Member (MICE) and registration with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

You'll need one of the following:

• Accredited BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering or engineering, or a qualification of equivalent standard (after it has been assessed as meeting the minimum standard)
• Accredited integrated MEng degree
• Approved Higher Diploma or foundation degree, with additional study to top up the qualification to bachelor's level – this is known as further learning
• An approved NVQ4 or SVQ4, plus further learning to top up your qualification to degree level
• A Higher Apprenticeship, plus further learning to top up your qualification to degree level
• Accredited degrees, Higher National Diplomas or Higher National Certificates in engineering, started in 1999 or before, may meet the requirements for IEng registration. Use our course search for more details

ICE Member (MICE) and registration with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer (CEng)

You'll need one of the following:

• Accredited BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) (or a qualification which is assessed to be of equivalent standard), plus further learning to top up the qualification to master’s level. This could be an accredited MSc or Engineering Doctorate (EngD) – see the JBM website for a list of accredited further learning programmes
• Accredited integrated MEng or bachelor's degree
• Accredited degrees in engineering, started in 1999 or before, may meet the requirements for CEng registration. Use our course search tool to find out

ICE Member (MICE) without Engineering Council registration

You'll need a UK bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in any subject. We use the NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre) database to decide which qualifications are equivalent to those studied overseas

Registration as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) with the Society for the Environment

If you want to register as a chartered environmentalist, you need to have a master’s-level qualification. If you don't, you need to be able to show you have an equivalent level of knowledge as someone who does.
