Tara Sirati, chartered senior geotechnical engineer for Jacobs, was recognised by reviewers for her excellence in the award’s communications task.
This year’s ICE Wales Cymru Paterson Prize has gone to Tara Sirati, a chartered senior geotechnical engineer for Jacobs, Cardiff.
The prize is awarded for the best written communication task by a Welsh candidate in their final ICE Professional Review.
Nominations for this award are coveted as candidates are recommended solely by the reviewers.
Sirati was recognised by her reviewers for excellence in the communications task and commended on the extent of her professional commitment and clear understanding of the attributes required in the review.
She said: "The piece I wrote for the written assignment came from passion and strong belief that civil engineers have an ever-lasting positive impact on their communities.
“Winning the Paterson Prize gives me the strength and motivation to carry on, and work even harder to focus my career on making a difference."
Committed to diversity
Sirati is currently the chair of the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect committee (FIR) for ICE Wales Cymru.
She’s passionate about raising awareness on various aspects of diversity and inclusion, such as neurodiversity, deafness and colour blindness.
She extends the same passion to her workplace, where she’s part of various networks aiming to give colleagues in the industry a platform to deepen their awareness and understanding.
In the UK, she’s been involved with major highway schemes and has experience in other sectors such as rail and water.
She’s also an active member of Engineers for Overseas Developments, currently working on completing Faith School in Mbale, Uganda.
Keith Jones, director of ICE Wales Cymru, said Sirati is a “worthy” winner of the award.
"We are delighted that she has received recognition for her continuous input into the work of the ICE in Wales and her dedication to educating others on awareness issues,” he said.
The Paterson Prize was historically awarded by the Institution of Municipal Engineers in honour of Colonel James Paterson OBE (1886 – 1985).
