The Cross Bay Link in Hong Kong has won the public vote for most popular infrastructure project from the last 25 years.

Nearly 4,000 people voted for their favourite projects as part of a competition held to mark the 25th anniversary of the ICE Hong Kong Association (HKA).

The first runner-up was Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant, followed by second runner-up Harbour Area Treatment Scheme.

The ICE HKA was established in November 1999.

With more than 8,000 members, it’s the ICE’s largest region outside the UK.

About the winning project

The Cross Bay Link is a dual, two-lane carriageway with a cycle path and a footway.

It spans 1.8km across Junk Bay to connect Tseung Kwan O with Kowloon East.

The bridge features the ‘Eternity Arch’ double-arch, high strength steel design, which has become an iconic Hong Kong landmark.

As well as enhancing connectivity, the project promotes green living.

It also demonstrates the use of advanced technologies such as design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) and float-over installation.

These ensure sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

About the runners-up

The first stage of Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant (TKODP) is one of Hong Kong’s Water Supplies Department’s projects to diversify its water sources.

It also makes its water supply more resilient to climate change.

The plant produces 135 million litres of potable water per day, which makes up 5% of Hong Kong's freshwater consumption.

Planning is underway for the second stage of the plant to expand production to 270 million litres per day, to cater for about 10% of Hong Kong’s freshwater consumption.

Meanwhile, the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) was a major government initiative to improve the water quality in Victoria Harbour.

It provides for the proper collection, treatment and disposal of all sewage that discharges into the harbour from the urban areas of Hong Kong.

The other finalists

All the finalists were projects that have made a significant positive impact on the development and community of Hong Kong.

The awards celebrated the progress that Hong Kong has made over the past quarter of a century.
