National Infrastructure Commission appoints ICE trustee

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has appointed ICE trustee Professor Jim Hall as one of three new experts helping to advise the UK government.

“Their expertise will be particularly useful as we work towards publication of the second National Infrastructure Assessment next year,” said NIC chair and ICE Past President Sir John Armitt.

Professor Hall brings expertise in climate and carbon to the commission, and will join alongside two other experts, Nicholas Winser CBE and Kate Willard OBE.

Winser has more than 30-years experience in the energy sector, and Willard is the government-appointed Thames Estuary envoy.

They will serve on the commission from 1 May 2022 to April 2027.

Meet Professor Jim Hall – climate expert

Professor Jim Hall is a professor of climate and environmental risks at the University of Oxford.

He’s also the director of research in the School of Geography and the Environment and director of the university’s Environmental Change Institute.

Before joining the University of Oxford, he held academic positions at Newcastle University and the University of Bristol.

Professor Hall is a member of the ICE Trustee Board and vice president of the institution, carbon and climate.

Subject to an interim annual election by the ICE Council, he’s set to become ICE president in November 2024.

Professor Hall is also a member of the UK prime minister’s Council for Science and Technology and chair of the Science Advisory Committee of the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA).

Furthermore, he created and chairs the UK Data and Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure (DAFNI).

He was awarded the ICE George Stephenson Medal in 2001 and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water in 2018.

He was also a contributing author to the Nobel Prize-winning Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
