ICE celebrates a decade of membership growth

Date
28 May 2025

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has sustained a decade of registered membership growth.

This milestone achievement is reflected in the Engineering Council’s annual publication of Professional Registration Statistics, which shares insights on engineers and technicians registered through professional engineering institutions (PEIs).

The ICE is the only large PEI (one that has 3,900 registrants or more) to have achieved 10 years of consecutive growth.

The ICE attributes its growth to its clear strategy, building closer relationships with academic and corporate partners, and the hard work of its staff and dedicated volunteer members.

This collective effort has enabled the ICE to support more candidates for professional qualification year-on-year.

Civil and infrastructure engineers play an essential role in delivering resilient infrastructure, tacking climate change, and building a more sustainable future.

Professional qualifications provided by the ICE and other professional engineering institutions demonstrate that individuals have met rigorous standards and made a commitment to ethical practice and lifelong learning.

In addition to steadily increasing its professionally-qualified membership, the ICE is also approaching another milestone – reaching 100,000 members.

Dr Janet Young, ICE’s director general, said:

“The ICE’s 10 years of consecutive growth across its qualified membership is a remarkable achievement. This has only been possible because of the work of ICE members and colleagues past and present. As membership continues to grow, I am looking forward to seeing what our community does next in its mission to help people and planet to thrive.”

Paul Bailey, chief executive officer, Engineering Council, said:

“Professional registration gives society assurance that engineers and technicians are competent and committed. I applaud the ICE for its efforts to continually grow professional registration among its members and work together with the wider engineering community to uphold trust in the profession.”

Professor Jim Hall, ICE President, said:

“To all ICE members – thank you. You are part of a global community of professionals whose work underpins modern life. Together, we have built a strong foundation for the future of civil and infrastructure engineering.”
