A day in your life

My days often start with reviewing project plans and schedules.

I use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create or modify project drawings and plans.

This is often followed with site visits, then meetings with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to discuss project progress, address concerns, and make necessary adjustments.

The day comes to a close as I prepare reports, update project documentation, and ensure all regulatory and safety standards are met.

The skills of a civil engineer are in demand worldwide. This opens up opportunities to work in different countries and experience diverse cultures.

Which individual project or person inspired you to become a civil engineer?

I was very good at mathematics and science, and that led me to choose to be an engineer.

That, coupled with the fact that a civil engineer lived in the same building as me, and he was brilliant, led me to choose civil engineering.

We asked Adeoye…

I would recommend a career in civil engineering because…

Civil engineers play a crucial role in shaping the world around us.

They design and build infrastructure that improves the quality of life for communities, such as safe roads, reliable water systems, and sustainable buildings.

The demand for civil engineers is expected to grow as populations increase, and the need for infrastructure development continues.

This provides a stable career path with plenty of opportunities for advancement.

Complete this phrase: I’m a civil engineer, but I’m also…

I'm also a project manager with flair for computer-aided design (CAD) software. I'm also a father, with two of my children studying engineering and one of them already a computer engineer.

What’s one great thing that you love about civil engineering that you didn’t know until you started working in the industry?

I never knew civil engineering cut across most human endeavours until I started working in the industry. Civil engineers work in almost all sectors of the economy.

Which civil engineering project (past or present) do you wish you’d worked on?

I would've liked to be involved in the design and construction of the Millennium Tower, which will be the tallest building in Abuja, Nigeria at 170 metres tall.

Name one civil engineering myth you’d like to bust.

That you must be a mathematics genius.

While maths skills are important, civil engineering also requires skills in project management, building information modelling (BIM), communication, and problem-solving.

Many civil engineers spend more time on these aspects than on complex mathematical calculations.

What motivated you to become professionally qualified?

Getting to the peak of my profession as a civil engineer and being internationally recognised prompted me to become professional qualified.

What’s the best thing about being professionally qualified with the ICE?

You are recognised as being excellent at the services you provide as a civil engineer.

How did the ICE and your employer support you to become professionally qualified?

I had a lot of encouragement from the regional director of ICE East Midlands and from my colleagues at work who supported me with resources and mentorship.

What do you value most about being an ICE member?

Professional collaboration, the availability of resources at the ICE, and the ability to attend seminars, workshop and conferences.

Do you have any hobbies?

I play tennis and I swim as a hobby.
