A day in my life
No two days are ever the same. One day I could be designing a major capital maintenance project.
The next, I could be the technical expert diagnosing the failure of a critical trunk main/sewer and providing engineering support to minimise disruption.
The work that I do day in day out has a direct positive impact on the community we serve and the environment we live in.
Civil engineering has changed me as a person. Through networking and my professional career, I've become more of an extrovert and significantly improved my communication and interpersonal skills.
Which individual project or person inspired you to become a civil engineer?
Bridges and structures were always a major fascination. I always wondered how large complex bridge piers were designed and installed.
We asked Jordan…
I would recommend a career in civil engineering because…
It’s so varied, and it offers the flexibility to work between home, the office and sites throughout the country.
Every project provides a different challenge and keeps my brain active day in day out.
You get to meet thousands of like-minded people who all share similar passions and interests.
It’s a career where you will never stop learning no matter how advanced you are.
Complete this phrase: I’m a civil engineer, but I’m also …
A husband and father. I have managed to make a career out of something I have always been passionate about which enables me to provide a good life for myself and others within my close circle.
What about being a civil engineer gets you out of bed each morning?
Knowing that today could be completely different from yesterday, and tomorrow's problem will likely be totally different again.
What’s one great thing that you love about civil engineering that you didn’t know until you started working in the industry?
I now have an appreciation of how far civil engineering extends and the impacts it has on the world. Growing up, naively I thought of civils as bridges and buildings, now I realise there’s a whole lot more!
Which civil engineering project (past or present) do you wish you’d worked on?
The Las Vegas Sphere!
Has civil engineering helped you overcome any personal hurdles/difficulties?
Yes. I used to be more of an introvert. I didn’t go out of my way to speak to people or network. I feared phone conversations in an office environment.
My career has enabled me to overcome any fears as I need to communicate with internal and external stakeholders day in day out.
With experience comes competence and now I am comfortable in leading my direct reports and project teams, chairing meetings, etc.
What motivated you, or is motivating you, to become professionally qualified?
It was a personal goal I had set myself when leaving university.
As I progressed in my career, I realised I have a passion for further learning and more importantly, helping and mentoring other like-minded professionals.
By becoming a Chartered Engineer, I have been fortunate enough to obtain a senior position within my team where I can mentor younger staff.
What does being professionally qualified with the ICE mean for your career?
When I became a Chartered Engineer, I obtained a promotion to senior civil and structural engineer with the view of becoming a principal engineer and more in the future.
What’s the best thing about being professionally qualified with the ICE?
It opens doors in terms of opportunities to expand my knowledge, network and skills. Also, being able to encourage younger generations to pursue a career in engineering.
How did the ICE and your employer support you to become professionally qualified?
I went through a training agreement, had continuous support and completed a vast amount of CPD.
What do you value most about being an ICE member?
Being part of a world-renowned institution with post nominals which represent years of hard work.
