ICE Quest Technician Scholarship 2024
Helping to improve the ICE training scheme within AtkinsRéalis
New Civil Engineer Degree Apprentice of the Year Award 2024
I chose to do an apprenticeship because...
The balance of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience is incredibly beneficial. It helps develop a well-rounded skill set, which was a key factor for me!
Becoming professionally qualified with the ICE demonstrates dedication and technical ability as an engineer, allowing you to work and lead major projects.
Which individual project or person inspired you to become a civil engineer or technician?
I’ve always been fascinated by how infrastructure shapes our world and improves live. It plays an important part in our daily lives, all while connecting communities.
A particular project that I have enjoyed working on during my apprenticeship is Sizewell C.
We asked Niamh…
A day in your life
As an apprentice within the hydraulics team, a typical day starts with prioritising my tasks.
These often include modelling steady state and transient flows, or conducting pipeline calculations.
I also attend meetings, create presentations, and collaborate with project team members.
However, no two days are the same, which is one of the reasons I enjoy civil engineering so much!
What would you say to anyone considering a civil engineering apprenticeship?
I would highly recommend a civil engineering apprenticeship to others as it provides the opportunity to explore different aspects of engineering.
It’s an excellent way to gain hands-on experience while building a strong foundation of knowledge.
Complete this phrase: I’m a civil engineering apprentice, but I’m also…
I’m a civil engineering apprentice, but I also have a passion for fitness and love for travel!
What about being a civil engineer apprentice gets you out of bed each morning?
Knowing that the work I do has a positive impact on society and plays a part in achieving net zero and sustainability targets.
What’s one great thing that you love about civil engineering that you didn’t know until you started working in the industry?
I didn’t fully understand the level of collaboration across different disciplines. Each day brings new tasks and challenges.
Working with a diverse team helps create innovative and successful solutions.
Which civil engineering project (past or present) do you wish you’d worked on?
I’d love to have been involved in the design and construction of the London 2012 Olympics!
Being part of such a high-profile project would have given me great exposure to new and emerging technologies.
Contributing to sustainable solutions would have offered great learning opportunities.
Name one civil engineering myth you’d like to bust.
The myth that you need to be exceptionally skilled in math and physics!
While understanding these subjects is essential, civil engineering is more about problem solving and applying practical knowledge to real-world challenges.
What will IEng MICE status mean for your career?
Achieving Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status will demonstrate that I have the skills, experience, and knowledge to make well-informed decisions as an engineer.
It will open doors to advanced career opportunities and provide a platform for continuous learning and professional growth.
