An apprenticeship was the perfect option, as it allowed me to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications.
Being able to work on live projects not only reinforces my learning but also gives me a sense of accomplishment as I see the tangible impact of my contributions.
The added advantage of earning while developing practical skills made the opportunity even more rewarding and an invaluable step toward achieving my career goals.

Which individual project or person inspired you to become a civil engineer or technician?
Visiting the Sagrada Família in Barcelona.
I was struck not only by its sheer size but by the sight of its ongoing construction (even though it started in 1882!).
The Sagrada Família, with its blend of architectural innovation and engineering techniques, has become a symbol of the legacy of the construction world, influencing many generations of engineers.
This trip made me realise the impact civil engineering has on communities and society, and it inspired me to want to be a part of that influence.

What would you say to anyone considering a civil engineering apprenticeship?
I would say go for it!
This pathway immerses you in the industry from day one. It provides exposure to seasoned professionals and the chance to make meaningful contributions to projects that shape and improve the world around us.
It also fosters personal and professional growth as you learn to effectively balance work responsibilities, academic development and your social life.

The passion everyone brings to the field.
From the moment you step into the office, it’s evident that people are genuinely interested in the work they do, and that enthusiasm drives everything they accomplish.
Name one civil engineering myth you’d like to bust.
That you need to be a straight-A student. While academics are important, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving are just as crucial to excelling in the field.
What does EngTech MICE status mean for your career?
Achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status (and hopefully Incorporated Engineer [IEng] status) was a significant milestone for my career.
It demonstrates my technical expertise, professional competence, and commitment to maintaining high industry standards.
It provides recognition within the engineering community and reassures clients and employers of my ability to deliver high-quality work.
My EngTech status has also opened doors to new opportunities, whether through increased responsibility, access to more complex tasks, or the ability to mentor others.
It solidifies my standing as a qualified professional and serves as a steppingstone for continuous development.
