Laying the foundation for Nigeria’s rapid economic development
The development of Lekki Deep Sea Port was conceptualised on the basis of a significant gap in projected demand and capacity.
Market studies indicated that the demand for containers in the region is expected to grow significantly up to 2025.
Given the expansion constraints on the existing infrastructure, the capacity in Lagos is incapable to meet the growing demand.
Upon completion, Lekki Deep Sea Port will become one of the largest deep-water ports in West Africa.
The strategic location, flexible and optimised layout, and modern facilities give Lekki Port a competitive edge over any other port facility in the West African region.
The project enjoys a development structure that is the first of its kind in Nigeria.
It's one of the single largest private investments in infrastructure in Nigeria.

Lekki Port will be the first deep sea port in Nigeria and will be one of the largest in West Africa.

Facilities at the port will include well-designed marine infrastructure, such as container (phase one), dry bulk, and liquid terminals (phase two), making it a truly multi-purpose port.

The terminal can accommodate 18,000TEU container vessels, with the annual throughput of the port at 1.2 million TEU.
How was the project built?
The Covid-19 pandemic posed a great challenge throughout the project’s construction.
The impact was felt throughout the whole construction process, including the increasing cost of materials and equipment, and the challenge of getting materials delivered by sea.
This led to an increase in local procurement and material supply, stocking up on stone, cement and other ground materials to ensure timely completion.
Strict Covid-19 regulations were also implemented. A comprehensive medical system and nucleic acid testing room were established to provide medical protection for all staff.
The project made efficient use of BIM technology during its implementation, effectively improving the level of design and construction control.
It won first prize in the sixth Longtu Cup National BIM Competition and in the design group of the third Science and Technology Innovation Cup BIM competition.
The project also conducted targeted digital and analogue research, based on the characteristics of long-period waves in West Africa.
It adjusted and optimised the direction of breakwaters and waterways, reducing the number of downtime days.
Difference the project has made and will make
The port will have significant economic benefits - it’s expected to contribute more than $200 billion to the government exchequer and create 170,000 new jobs.
As the project was constructed during the Covid-19 pandemic, the project team actively donated pandemic prevention and living materials (such as food, household items, PPE, etc) to the local community.
It will significantly increase the container throughput capacity of the western Nigerian port complex (container throughput capacity is the estimated capacity of a dock to clear containers in a year).
It will also promote infrastructure growth in Africa through the construction of highways, railways and aviation networks.
