The Conservation Information Resource for Civil Engineers

The Conservation Information Resource for Civil Engineers (CIRCE) provides a wide range of information and guidance for civil and building engineers working on conservation, restoration and extending the life of existing structures.

Working on existing structures requires a different approach from designing and constructing new ones. It is essential to understand the current state of a structure before proposing interventions, stabilisation, remediation or strengthening. CIRCE is based on the well-established view that good conservation and refurbishment of existing structures can be achieved only when those working on such projects understand as much as can be reasonably ascertained about:

  • The design and construction of the original structure;
  • The subsequent history of modifications, repairs and previous conservation and refurbishments;
  • The current state of the existing structure and the materials of which it is made.

Based on this knowledge, good conservation and refurbishment of existing structures can be undertaken by applying appropriate repair, remediation, strengthening and protection techniques.

CIRCE provides users with quick access to the considerable body of technical information about conservation, restoration and extending the life of existing structures that is available on-line. It contains no new or original material.

Links provided in CIRCE lead the user to a source of information – either directly to a website, article or book that can be viewed immediately (identified with the direct icon) or to a bibliographic reference to a book or paper. Printed resources include mention of the number of pages as a means of indicating their depth – from a short overview to comprehensive technical guidance.

CIRCE currently has four main sections. Simply click on the appropriate panel and begin exploring our resources.
