Become an ICE Student Ambassador

It’s a brilliant opportunity for you to build your profile and develop key skills that will be highly sought-after in the workplace, from communication and presenting to project management.

As a student ambassador, you act as the voice of the ICE.

The message you share with your peers will be simple: the ICE is there for them through their whole career.

This means advice and support during their journey to becoming professionally qualified civil and infrastructure engineers - and beyond.

Why become an ICE Student Ambassador?

Being an ICE Student Ambassador gives you the chance to develop useful skills, and gain recognised experience while supporting others.

Previous ambassadors have gone on to careers such as transport planning officer, senior civil engineer, design lead and structural engineer.

As a student ambassador, you’ll gain:

• Formal recognition as an ICE Student Ambassador and experience representing a respected global institution – great to add to your CV and LinkedIn profile.
• Opportunities to build your professional network with students, graduates, and industry experts.
• Access to mentoring, networking, initial professional development (IPD) and exclusive opportunities.
• Development of skills for work, including communication, leadership, marketing, influencing, organisation and time management.
• The opportunity to help shape a more engaged and connected civil engineering community at your university.
• Insight into civil engineering career pathways and professional qualifications, and a stronger understanding of how to make the most of your free ICE student membership.

What does being an ICE Student Ambassador involve?

As an ICE Student Ambassador, your role is to raise awareness, drive engagement, and grow ICE student membership at your university.

If you’re a go-getter and love to find ways to connect with your peers, the role is ideal for you.

Wherever you study, the ICE provides support and resources to help you succeed.

We provide a full brief, a plan and a checklist for you to use. We’ll also check in with you regularly over the year to answer any questions you might have.

The activities you might carry out include:

• Promoting ICE membership, campaigns and opportunities at your university.
• Supporting events, such as talks, workshops and information sessions.
• Creating a visible presence at your university (e.g. stands, campaigns, noticeboards).
• Sharing updates and opportunities through social media channels.
• Collaborating with your civil engineering society and local ICE Early Careers Network (ECNet).
• Encouraging students to attend events and get involved with the ICE early in their careers.

There may be more than one ambassador at your university, which means you may also have access to a support network of fellow ambassadors.

You’re encouraged to share your ideas and experience with other student ambassadors, including at other universities, via a dedicated WhatsApp group chat. We also regularly organise online gatherings for you, held on Microsoft Teams.

What’s the time commitment?

The role is designed to fit alongside your studies, with flexible involvement, which means that you can also take a step back during your exam periods, if you need to.

Your time commitment will typically include:

• Initial online briefing and training.
• Posting on social once a week.
• Running a stall.
• Attendance at selected ICE events or career talks (one a term) .
• Mid-year and end-of-year check-ins with ICE staff.

We want to keep you informed and help you to gain meaningful experience without overwhelming your busy schedules.

How to become an ICE Student Ambassador

There are two routes to becoming an ambassador, depending on whether you’re at an ICE Academic Partner university or not.

You can see if you’re at a partner university by checking the list at the bottom of the Academic Partnerships webpage.

You can be an ambassador from the second year of your studies.

1. Students at ICE Academic Partner universities
   If you’re at a partner university, complete the following application form to register your interest
2. Students at non-academic partner universities
   You can still get involved by contacting your local Early Careers Network (ECNet), which will help you get started and connect you with opportunities to represent the ICE.

What does the selection process look like?

You’ll be selected based on your application, the ideas you have for promoting the ICE on campus, your social media presence, and overall positive attitude.
