The FLOW footbridge is a result of a fresh approach to collaborative working. The project focused on doing things differently to create a highly motivated and empowered team to do what they are best at.
This is a Network Rail Research and Development portfolio funded project to develop a low cost lightweight solution to close railway foot crossings. The prototype bridge offers a lower cost solution by utilising a high strength, low weight material and modular design, drastically reducing construction time and cost. It also incorporates a structural health monitoring system that will help improve the design and change Network Rail manages the asset.
The focus of the design has been to create a bridge that enhances communities and the use of new materials that can reduce the impact to the environment. This project has demonstrated what is possible with the talent in the UK. The challenge is how we make the most of it.
This event is co-badged with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
Ahmad is a Senior Design Engineer (SDE) at Network Rail who is currently the lead designer of the R&D funded project to develop an innovative lightweight low-cost footbridge solution. A Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he has 21 years’ experience of bridge design, having started as a Graduate Engineer in Gwent Consultancy (now Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure). He then worked for Mouchel and Jacobs Engineering before joining Network Rail in 2018 as a Senior Design Manager. During this time his role changed to Senior Design Engineer following restructure of the organisation as a SDE.
His main area of expertise is Bridges, Advanced Finite Element Analysis of Structures and Highway Structures Design. Some of the notable projects he has worked on include the Greater Bargoed Regeneration Scheme, Hinkley Point C Aggregate Jetty Bridge and JC Decaux, the Torch Display Tower in London. At Network Rail, Ahmad is one of the lead designers in Network Rail Design Delivery (NRDD) reviewing designs from feasibility to detailed design to improve efficiencies, constructability and innovation.
Andy is currently leading an R&D funded project to develop an innovative lightweight low-cost footbridge solution. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he has 30 years’ experience of Railway Civil Engineering, having started as a Graduate Trainee with London Underground, then going to Scott Wilson Consultants before joining Railtrack, subsequently Network Rail, in 1999. During this time Andy has held various roles including Design Engineer, Resident Engineer, Project Engineer, Renewals Engineer, Project Manager, Asset Manager.
His main area of expertise is Bridges however he also has been involved with Track, Geotechnics, Buildings and Off-Track as well as leading on introducing innovation to projects, notable successes include the FRP footbridge at Dawlish Station and the development of standard designs.
