The ICE Early Careers Network West Midlands are excited to host the region’s first High Early Strength Concrete Cube Competition hosted by the University of Wolverhampton and sponsored by Mott Macdonald. Expanding the current competition currently hosted by the ICE Early Careers Network East Midlands, the competition aims to: 

  • Encourage the region’s students, apprentices, and graduates to test their skills and creativity to produce the strongest concrete cube
  • Provide an opportunity to demonstrate presentation skills and promote knowledge sharing
  • Provide a networking opportunity for career professionals in the West Midlands


Open to ICE members who are students, apprentices or graduates.


  • Participants may register teams of a maximum of three members. 
  • Cement, aggregate (20mm), sand and water will be provided. 
  • Participants are allowed to include additive(s) in the mix, but this must be disclosed ahead of the event. 
  • The maximum cementitious content allowed is 500kg/m3.
  • Participants will be required to mix / cast the cubes on Wednesday, 10 April and test the cubes after 24 hours on Thursday, 11 April. 
  • Participants will be required to prepare a three-slide presentation to explain materials used and the mix designed.
  • Judging will be held on Thursday 11 April and will be based on: creativity, economy, sustainability and concrete preparation.
  • Full rules and competition details will be shared with your team leader.
  • Teams that do not comply with the Competition Rules will be disqualified.


  • Strongest cube: £150        
  • Best presentation: £150
