Overview

First Stage of Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant

A reliable freshwater supply is always of paramount importance in sustaining Hong Kong's development and economic growth. However, we are facing various challenges in securing a stable water supply, including the increasing local water demand arising from population and economic growth, and frequent occurrence of extreme weather conditions.

In this connection, WSD has been implementing the "Total Water Management (TWM) Strategy" since 2008 to diversify water supply resources and to develop new water resources. Under the TWM strategy, the finished Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant (TKODP) will be among the strategic infrastructure of WSD in its mission to provide reliable and adequate supply of potable water resilient to climate change.

Upon the commissioning of the First Stage of TKODP, its production capacity of potable water will be around 135 million litres per day (Mld). This is equivalent to 5% of the daily freshwater consumption in Hong Kong, with future expansion allowing figures to reach an ultimate capacity of 270 Mld.

Through participating in the technical visit, participants will be able to visit the First Stage of TKODP, where the adoption of advanced water treatment approaches such as the reverse osmosis technology will be introduced. Innovative construction technologies and sustainable design employed in the project will also be covered.
