As part of Costain’s continuing drive to champion the industry to eliminate harm, the 13th Annual Joint ICE-Costain Safety Lecture is entitled “Eliminating Harm Through a Relentless Focus on the Brilliant Basics”.

We have all taken great strides to reduce the harm caused to our people, property and environment in the development, delivery, and operation of infrastructure.

2020 saw some of the best Health and Safety Performance most of us have ever experienced, however 2021 has seen performance revert to pre-Covid-19 levels.

Throughout 2020 we really focused on the basics and what must go right to prevent the spread of Covid in the workplace, there was also a real urgency in doing so, and inevitably this focus spread to our wider Health and Safety activities.

2021 has seen us start to learn to live with Covid-19 and consequently we have reduced our focus on the Covid Basics, which will have led to a similar reduced focus on our wider health and safety basics.

If we are to realise interminable improvement in our health and safety performance, we must have a Relentless Focus On the Brilliant Basics, focusing on the presence of things we need to see happening across our business’s every day.

This year’s Lecture will be Co-Chaired by ICE President Ed McCann and Costain’s Natural Resources Managing Director Maxine Mayhew who will be joined by three fantastic guest speakers:

Libby Jackson, Former Columbus Flight Director, and Human Spaceflight Expert

Libby Jackon, who spent the best part of a decade working in Mission Control, will share some of the insights into how the teams of people on Earth work hard to keep the crews in space safe and how they cannot afford to get distracted from focusing on the basics and what must go right.

Andy Alder, Programme Director, Tideway/Jacobs

Bryan Williams, Works Superintendent, Tideway East

From the outset, one of the Tideway Projects core values has been the health, safety and wellbeing of anyone involved in or affected by the project. In order to deliver that value Tideway set out to be transformational in its approach. Andy and Bryan will explain how the Tideway team has worked to achieve this, with a focus on teamwork, getting the basics right, and on encouraging and celebrating best practice.
