Overview

Engineering decisions of the past saw Liverpool as the second city of the British Empire. Engineering helped the city solve problems created by unprecedented population density, sanitation requirements and the needs of international transport of people and goods.

This tour will take us on an external street-level view of many buildings and sites in and around the city centre which are of engineering interest.

The route length is approximately 3km (less than 2 miles) from start to finish, however you’re free to curtail participation at your convenience as the tour is contained within the city centre and within easy access to public transport/amenities.

A free bowl of scouse is included following the tour (for the first 20 people who have pre-booked only). When booking please notify us if you have any special dietary requirements as we may not be able to accommodate last-minute requests on the day.

If you've missed out on a free bowl of scouse, you're still welcome to join us for the walk only - you can still register to attend or just be at the meeting point and tag along.

Key information

  1. The walk will start outside Moorfields train station and will end at the Ship & Mitre pub.
  2. The weather might be rainy – please check forecasts and wear suitable clothing.
  3. Please wear suitable footwear and don’t be afraid to let the guide know if you need to stop for a rest.
  4. Please bring your own water to make sure you stay hydrated during the tour.
  5. Photography is welcome. If you are partaking in the tour then please understand that other guests may be taking photographs.
  6. The entire tour takes place within public spaces, often crossing public highways. Please observe a common-sense approach, especially when walking near live carriageways.

This event is organised by ICE Merseyside Branch, based on earlier work undertaken by members of the Historical Engineering Group.

Terry McCormick

Terry is a design engineer working for Ringway Jacobs on the Cheshire East Highways contract.

He has 13 years of broad civil engineering experience in various sectors (water, highways, flood risk and drainage, transport) coupled with 10 years prior work in the transport industry, giving him a unique end -user experience of civil engineering infrastructure.

Terry began volunteering for the ICE as a mature student in 2010 whilst undertaking his MEng Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Liverpool. It was during this time that Terry initiated the Engineering Walking Tour of Liverpool as an annual guided tour, based on prior work carried out by the Historical Engineering Group and the ICE Merseyside Branch.

Terry has personally organised and guided this tour every year since its conception, and is grateful for the input that various guests on the tour have provided over the years.

As a Merseyside Branch member since 2010 (past chair and current branch secretary), STEM Ambassador and University of Liverpool Industrial Liaison Committee member, Terry enjoys bringing together the human face of civil engineering and promoting open, honest and collaborative engagement to problem-solving.
