Overview

This Lunch and Learn session covers how to embed sustainability as a culture within engineering design.

Rachel Bannon-Godfrey will begin with a holistic overview of sustainability, and Andrew Bent-Marshall will explain how the PAS2080 framework can be used within businesses to embed sustainability into the standard design process.

It forms part of the ICE Early Careers Network (ECNet)’s Sustainability Month, held throughout April to align with Earth Day. This year’s theme focuses on supporting early‑career engineers to embed sustainability into their projects from the very start.

The next generation of engineers understand the realities of climate change. With global efforts still not on track to limit warming to 1.5°C by 2050, the threshold to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change. As this deadline approaches, embedding sustainability into design is no longer optional – it must become standard practice.

While it can sometimes feel challenging to make a meaningful difference at a junior level, early career engineers collectively hold significant influence over the future direction of the industry. Throughout Sustainability Month, attendees will hear from leaders who are driving cultural change and shaping a more resilient, sustainable future for civil engineering.
