Overview

This is a photographic exploration of the historical relationship between people and the use of rock in both everyday life and as a foundation for society. Rock as a building stone has been used for millennia in various ways with its application shaped by location, engineering properties, and societal needs including: defence, transport infrastructure, leisure and buildings of myriad sizes and purposes (both religious and domestic).

Rock has typically been used close to its source or excavation site, reflecting both the technological development of stone working and transportation networks, as well as the reuse of waste material to facilitate excavation and processing. However, some high-status uses or sought after rock types were shipped nationally and internationally.

Industrial centres have permanently changed the landscape on diverse scales, and changing the landscape to facilitate construction is one aspect of our relationship in areas where building-quality rock is in short supply. The presentation covers locations throughout the United Kingdom but primarily focuses on the north.

Dr Ursula Lawrence

Dr Ursula Lawrence is a Technical Director in Engineering Geology, with more than 35 years’ experience in the infrastructure sector. Ursula’s projects vary in size, up to major tunnelling and rail projects such as Crossrail and HS2, from conceptual design through to construction stages. More recently, Ursula has become involved in the power sector, with site characterisation studies for underground storage and new power station projects.

Ursula has been involved with the Engineering Group of the Geological Society since 2006, including serving as Chair (2020–2022), and in 2023 was awarded the Engineering Group Award for this work and for her contribution to two special publications: EGSP 31 Groundwater in Design and Construction (Duncan and Lawrence 2025), and Impacts of Weathering in Engineering Geology.

Ursula is a keen landscape photographer. Her passion for photography grew out of her work as a geologist and her love of the landscape. Her images have been used by the Geological Society of London in calendars and on journal covers. She has travelled widely, but always returns to the varied UK landscape.
