Overview

The main phase of the Avonmouth Severnside ecology mitigation and flood defence project was completed in 2025.

In 2019, a client partnership of the Environment Agency, South Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council appointed BAM Nuttall and Mott MacDonald as a joint venture to deliver the detailed design and construction of new flood defences and wetlands.

The work spans 17km of the Severn Estuary and River Avon from Aust to Shirehampton, designed to reduce flood risk for at least 2,500 homes and businesses, both now and in the future.

During the presentation, Colin Taylor (Environment Agency) will outline the formation of the project partnership, the scheme’s key objectives, the approach to stakeholder engagement, and the challenges of working in close proximity to the Severn Estuary.

Mike Cheetham (Mott MacDonald) will provide an overview of the engineering and environmental components of the project, highlighting how sustainability, innovation and collaboration shaped the successful delivery of the scheme.

The project was recognised with three awards at the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2024, including the People’s Choice Award, voted for by the public.
