Overview

A Wind Engineering Society evening talk in One Great George Street featuring the multi-disciplinary work that went in ameliorating the excessive pedestrian level wind conditions in the vicinity of Bridgewater Place, a landmark building in the City of Leeds.

The complex interaction between site constraints, architectural aspects, engineering challenges and wind microclimate will be presented by four speakers from Buro Happold Engineering.

Simon Fryer

Simon (Chartered Engineer, MEng CEng FICE FIStructE), is a Technical Director of Buro Happold Engineering with over 30 years’ experience in the design of international bridge projects. Having started work with G Maunsell and Partners in 1989, he joined Buro Happold in 2001. He has been involved in an extensive portfolio in both scale and type within the bridge and civil engineering sector. He has detailed knowledge of the analysis and design of reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete and steel structures.

Notable recent project work includes the Lille Langebro (Copenhagen) and Elizabeth Line OLE gantry rigorous assessments (London), both winners of Structural Awards in 2021.

Darren started as a graduate at Buro Happold in 2012 and over 10 years of experience has worked on an extensive portfolio of structural schemes across a range of sectors and materials. His particular interest lies in the refurbishment and repurposing of existing buildings, and in the conservation of historic structures. He is focussed on developing creative and pragmatic solutions to technical challenges. Recent career highlights include the Majestic in Leeds, the Factory in Manchester, and the National Railway Museum Vision 2025 scheme.

Kenneth Leung

After graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2013, Kenneth joined Buro Happold in the bridge engineering and civil structure’s team. He has been involved in a range of demanding projects both locally in the UK and overseas. Kenneth has experience in a wide range of projects, including structural design, examination and structural assessment, refurbishment, and strengthening schemes. His notable projects include: Hammersmith Flyover Strengthening Works, Northern Spire bridge in Sunderland, Eastwick and Sweetwater Development bridges and more recently the New Danube Bridge in Budapest.

Dr Bernardo Vazquez

Bernardo Vasquez has worked for engineering consultancy Buro Happold since 1998, specialising in construction technology, environmental impact assessment and wind engineering. Also experienced in solar energy and master planning, he works in the firm’s sustainability and physics team, which has advanced environmental simulation capabilities.

Vasquez chairs the executive committee of the UK Wind Engineering Society, the foremost national body dealing with wind effects in urban settings. He has also acted as an industrial adviser to the city councils of Liverpool and Leeds.

Vasquez has presented papers at conferences both in the UK and overseas. His work has been published in several journals and course notes.
