Overview

In 2020 the BTS embarked on updating the BTS/ICE Specification for tunnelling from its third edition, released in 2009. This presentation will illustrate the ever increasing role of sustainability and innovation in the tunnelling business and showcase how it has informed the review of the specification. Feedback from the industry and practical project experience have contributed to specific changes leading to more sustainable outcomes. Further, the roadmap to completion and opportunities for peer review will be presented.

Christoph Eberle

Christoph is a technical director for tunnels at Mott MacDonald. He has extensive experience in the design and design management of NATM and TBM tunnels in rock and soft ground. Christoph is known within the industry for his knowledge of the application of Eurocodes in tunnelling design, including sprayed concrete (SCL) and segmental linings.

Christoph has made considerable contributions to guidance and standards in tunnelling through his leadership on technical committees and working groups. As the immediate past chair of the BTS technical committee, he oversaw updates and publication of the BTS Specification for Tunnelling 4th Edition. Christoph has also chaired the ITAtech working group responsible for producing guidance on concrete segment design.
