Overview

With the increasing focus on the preservation and conservation of historic buildings, coupled with the sustainability objective of retaining and re-using existing structures, there is a pressing need for suitably qualified engineers to specify and oversee the specialised works that this entails.

CARE is the registration body for engineers that was established by the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers to identify and recognise those suitably qualified and who can ‘demonstrate a defined level of competency in the application of conservation within the construction process.’

This presentation gives a personal perspective on conservation civil and structural engineering in Ireland as well as the application process in a step-by-step way to encourage other engineers in Ireland to consider the merits of potentially becoming a conservation accredited engineer.
