Costain
Costain helps to improve people's lives through smart infrastructure solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK's energy, water, transportation and defence markets.
Event organised by ICE
As one of the UK’s leading infrastructure companies, Costain is committed to eliminating harm to our people, property and environment.
They have made significant improvements to the delivery, operation and maintenance of infrastructure. However, while they have successfully lowered incident rates, their goal remains the complete elimination of harm.
The 2024 ICE-Costain health and safety lecture will focus on how leading indicators can be used as the next step in the journey.
When it comes to health and safety, leading indicators are predictive measures used to identify and eliminate risks and hazards in the workplace that can lead to harm. They can provide foresight in the form of predicting trends and early warning for opportunities to improve, rather than focusing on events once they have taken place.
Join this lecture which will explore the following areas:
We are delighted to be joined by industry experts including Stuart Hughes, head of health and safety, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team and IOSH president, who will explore how they have used leading indicators in the cutting-edge sector of Formula 1.
The event will be co-chaired by Prof Priti Parikh, professor of Infrastructure engineering and international development and director of UCL’s Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction and ICE Trustee and Sam White, managing director of Natural Resources, Costain.

Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, University College London
professor of infrastructure engineering and international development
Professor Priti Parikh is the director of UCL’s Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction and the founding director of its Engineering for International Development Centre. The centre’s key research interests include finding locally acceptable water, sanitation and energy solutions in low- to middle-income countries.
Parikh has more than 20 years’ engineering consultancy experience in the UK, Asia and Africa, which has included working with slum communities to design infrastructure. In 2019, the Royal Academy of Engineering and Bboxx awarded her a five-year fellowship to fund research into how smart solar tech can improve access to energy in sub-Saharan Africa.
An ICE trustee since 2023, Parikh also sits on the board of the Happold Foundation, a charity helping engineers to participate in humanitarian projects around the globe.
Apolitical, an online knowledge-sharing platform for public servants worldwide, named Parikh on its 100 Most Influential Academics in Government list in 2021. The following year, she won a Top 50 Women in Engineering Award from the Women’s Engineering Society.
Support your peers in the North East Emerging Engineers Award final. This award promotes and recognises outstanding communication of civil engineering work. Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
This is an opportunity for Technicians to gather online to discuss ways in which we can help ourselves, each other and the ICE to provide ongoing learning and experience in the wide world of civil engineering.
