Overview

This online learned event explores the environmental and sustainability requirements that govern Qatar’s construction sector, with a focus on the permitting and compliance processes. Insights into the legislative framework in Qatar, including how environmental permits are obtained, renewed, and managed throughout a project’s lifecycle were presented by the speaker.

The session also highlights key aspects of environmental compliance during construction, such as the development of Construction Environmental Management Plans, implementation of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, environmental reporting, and close-out procedures.

Designed for professionals involved in infrastructure development and project delivery, this session aims to enhance understanding of environmental responsibilities and promote best practices that support sustainable construction. The event concluded with a live Q&A session to engage with participants and address specific queries related to the topic.

Smitha Shafeeq

Smitha is an Environmental Expert with over 18 years of multidisciplinary experience in Environmental Design, Permitting, Construction Environmental Management, Compliance, and Sustainability across the UK, Qatar, and India. Her career includes impactful roles as an Environmental Consultant and Specialist on major infrastructure projects such as Old Doha Port, Hamad Port, Lusail Tower & Car Park, Gewan Island (Pearl Qatar), and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. She has also worked on environmental compliance in the UK and conducted environmental research in India.

Smitha holds dual master’s degrees in environmental science—Environmental Pollution Control from Middlesex University (UK), and Environmental Management from Mahatma Gandhi University (India). 

She specialises in Environmental Permitting, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, implementation, and sustainability planning and compliance. She has led environmental efforts as a Consultant, Manager, and Auditor, ensuring regulatory compliance and championing sustainable practices in complex construction environments. In addition, Smitha holds a diploma in Journalism and worked as a journalist for two years.
