Embodied carbon reduction is essential for the future sustainability of infrastructure projects. Shaft and tunnel linings contribute in the region of 70% of embodied carbon associated with a tunnelling project. Geopolymer concrete is able to reduce the embodied carbon of concrete by up to 80%.
In this presentation, John Day will explain developments made over the last decade in the testing and use of geopolymer concrete and how adoption is increasing worldwide. Charles Allen will then discuss applications for geopolymer concrete in tunnel linings and its high durability performance. Finally, Richard Sutherden will set out a case study of the use and adoption on LPT2 and how a collaborative approach between the client, contractor, and designer is essential for future adoption.

John is a renowned concrete technologist who has spent his 40 years career working in the Asia-Pacific region concrete industries, mainly in Australia and Malaysia.
He has been the Group Technical Manager for the Wagners Industrial Services Group for the past 12 years and since 2013 has been responsible for the development of Wagners’ Earth Friendly Concrete (EFC®) geopolymer concrete.
John has extensive experience in high performance concretes in major high rise projects such as Melbourne Central, Petronas Towers and a number of Canary Wharf projects that he was seconded to Hanson UK to resolve technical and practical issues. During the past year he has been developing and promoting EFC in the United Kingdom.

Charles is a leading specialist in concrete engineering and construction materials with over 45 years experience. His experience includes the use of concrete for civil, building and tunnelling applications.
After a number of years working in the construction chemicals industry in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai, in 2000 he was appointed of Managing Director of the International Centre for Geotechnics and Underground Construction based in Zurich, a foundation responsible for the training and qualification of staff for tunnelling projects.
More recently, Charles has been involved as a consultant to a number of different organisations, within the civil engineering and tunnelling sectors and is currently advising joint venture contractors on the Deep Tunnel Sewer System, Phase 2 project in Singapore the Central Interceptor Tunnel in Auckland, New Zealand and the Thames Tideway project.
Charles is a fellow of the Concrete Society and a member of the ICT.

Richard is on the Expert support Panel for LPT2 and is the Engineering Director for J Murphy & Sons .
A Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the ICE he has twenty-seven years of experience in the construction industry, as a contractor, consultant, and client. He leads the engineering function for the Murphy Group with oversight on technical matters on all projects and bids and as well leading quality control, site engineering, temporary works, digital engineering, innovation, and tunnelling input across all sectors and regions.
The vast majority of his technical experience has been in tunnelling on projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension, The Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Lee Tunnel, Tideway, and more recently LPT2 and the North Bristol Relief Sewer.
