Overview

The Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) serves as the cornerstone specification for infrastructure.

In September of 2025, National Highways published the first major update to the document in decades, featuring a modernising restructuring and rewrite of the manual, including new frameworks for compiling project-specific information.

These changes impact documents covering earthworks, piling, trenchless installation, ground investigation, and the former “special structures” series. The updates also cover the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), including the “design of earthworks” document.

This presentation will help designers, specifiers and contractors navigate these new documents, providing key guidance about the documentation required to produce specifications in the updated format.

No matter if you’re early in your career or an experienced practitioner, the presentation will be a valuable resource for engineers of all levels.
