Overview
On the Somerset coast, an extraordinary civil engineering operation is underway to deliver the deep dig earthworks for Hinkley Point C (HPC), the UK’s first EPR nuclear power station.
It’s a complex project to excavate a massive area, overcoming geotechnical challenges to deliver essential foundations for the nation’s first nuclear power station in a generation.
Join members of the ‘Deep Dig Team’ at Hinkley for first-hand insight into this award-winning scheme.
Kier and BAM Nuttall have formed a fully integrated joint venture to deliver the £460M earthworks package.
This session will focus on the deep excavation for Units 1 and 2, which provide the sub-foundations for key sections of the power station, including the pump houses, outfall shaft, turbine hall and EPR reactor.
You’ll find out about some of the unique earthworks challenges created by the nature of the bed rock and the sheer scale of the scheme.
The presenters will discuss dewatering, slope monitoring, excavation, slope support (including spray concrete and nailing) and blinding works.
Discover why the heatsink phase of the project attracted an ICE South West Civil Engineering Award for excellence and innovation.
